Kafka's ouvre is interspersed with moments of utter anxiety. Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him - I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear - could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. The piece is part of the ballet Wild Swans, choreographed by Meryl Tankard at the Sydney Opera House in 2002, based on the fairy tale The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. Originally scored for soprano and orchestra, Eliza Aria introduces Princess Elisa and expresses her pure soul, innocence and belief in the goodness of the world: Without saying a word, she must weave stinging nettles into cloth to save her enchanted brothers. The short, enchanting vocalise is perhaps Elena Kats-Chernin's best-known creation and went around the world as music in a promotional video on YouTube. It is now available in numerous versions for `ifferent instruments and instrumentations.

The 27 art songs for soprano collected together in the present volume make up part of the Canzoniere op. 17 by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari,which, after the first edition of 1936, Ricordi’s re-published with a preface by the soprano Gemma Bertagnolli. This work bears witness to the quality of Italian chamber compositions in the first half of the twentieth century and, besides enlarging the concertrepertoire for singers, will be found an invaluable didactic work – in particular for courses in music for voice and piano – in music schools and academies.

Four Arms, Two Necks is a setting of a 17th century anonymous poem. The timelessness of the words in the love poem struck me and I set it to music, later dedicating the song to two friends, Anda and Bill Winters, in celebration of a wedding anniversary. Orpheus is from William ShakespeareÂ?s play The Life of King Henry VIII. Between 1996-2000, I composed and produced the music for audio recordings of all 38 Shakespeare plays in the Complete Arkangel Shakespeare collection. This song from the play was originallywritten for lute accompaniment and I later arranged the lute part for piano. Agua, Dónde Vas? is a setting of a poem by Federico GarcÃa Lorca. In 1998, I visited Barcelona to renew with a dear friend, Lucia from an illustrious family of flamenco musicians and dancers. We had met in 1985 when I first visited Granada and was hanging out in the flamenco tablaoÂ?s of the Albaicin and Granada proper. Through Lucia I got a glimpse of a world in which LorcaÂ?s poetry vibrated daily and as casually as the music, songs and rhythms that peppered and punctuated conversations, discussions, exchanges of opinions, mealtimes in homes and bars and the precious moments of just hanging out.

A Pole with Jewish roots, traveller and student, the versatile composer and publicist Szymon Laks developed his artistic maturity inthe fertile environment of the French capital between the world wars. Close to the Ecole de Paris, Laks' enthusiasm and openness forpopular music, neo-classicism and Polish song can also be heard in his works. His work was abruptly interrupted by the Second World War and his deportation to the Auschwitz concentration camp. In the song cycle created in 1947, which is full of tension on the frontiers between art song and folklore, Laks' most personal memories of his mother's singing - as well as of the Jewish culture in Poland, which was destroyed by National Socialism - echo through.

With an original text by the composer, Nkeiru Okoye’s WE MET AT THE SYMPHONY is a monodrama in three songs for soprano and string quartet or piano. The songs tell the story of a Black woman surprised to find a Black man in the sea of white faces at an orchestra concert, their subsequent romance, and her struggle to trust another Black man after betrayal and heartbreak. Okoye’s poignant, insightful, and sharp-witted poetry is set to dramatic and striking music that blends sensibilities from jazz, Broadway, and contemporary classical styles, with an unforgettable solo role for the soprano.
