Jacques Offenbach's more than 100 stage works are an endless treasure trove of vocal highlights with highly different musical moods and lyrical themes. To mark the 200th birthday of the great composer in 2019, which is at the same time the year of the 20th anniversary of the Offenbach Edition Keck OEK, the editor and Offenbach expert Jean-Christophe Keck has assembled a selection of arias. The piece is part of the ballet Wild Swans, choreographed by Meryl Tankard at the Sydney Opera House in 2002, based on the fairy tale The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. Originally scored for soprano and orchestra, Eliza Aria introduces Princess Elisa and expresses her pure soul, innocence and belief in the goodness of the world: Without saying a word, she must weave stinging nettles into cloth to save her enchanted brothers. The short, enchanting vocalise is perhaps Elena Kats-Chernin's best-known creation and went around the world as music in a promotional video on YouTube. It is now available in numerous versions for `ifferent instruments and instrumentations.

The 27 art songs for soprano collected together in the present volume make up part of the Canzoniere op. 17 by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari,which, after the first edition of 1936, Ricordi’s re-published with a preface by the soprano Gemma Bertagnolli. This work bears witness to the quality of Italian chamber compositions in the first half of the twentieth century and, besides enlarging the concertrepertoire for singers, will be found an invaluable didactic work – in particular for courses in music for voice and piano – in music schools and academies.
