Every fall, flocks of up to a million starlings create fluid formations of wheeling and darting birds called murmurations. Composer Peter Terry depicts this sea of birds, whose beautiful, hypnotic motions move as a vast single cloud that can block out the sun.

A copse is a thicket of trees and bushes that may be found in a meadow or in open land. In England, a copse will often be found on a moor. A copse needs a source of water that is usually a stream, small river or pond. A copse has abundant plant and animal life because it provides the perfect habitat and shelter for moisture loving plants, insects, small mammals, rodents, reptiles, and birds. If you were walking through the copse in the midst of willow trees, bluebells and march marigolds, you would see beautiful butterflies, dragonflies and moths. You might see a frog or toad jumping on the banks of the pond and you would hear the call of numerous birds. Ornithologists often spend many hours watching and counting birds in and around a copse. Migrating birds such as geese and herons may also be spotted at certain times of the year. If you sit very quietly, you might catch sight of a red fox, a rabbit or squirrel. A copse is a happy place to spend an afternoon or to go for a walk. Perhaps you will get to visit a nature preserve near your home where you can observe the wonderful world of the woodland wild life that can be found in abundance in a copse. To assist you in learning some of the techniques that you need to be able to use when playing Willow-Wood Copse, you may wish to work on the studies that accompany the piece.A copse is a thicket of trees and bushes that may be found in a meadow or in open land. After traveling out west in America, composer Tyler Arcari was intrigued by the rugged life of the deserts and canyons. When you stand still, the wind across the flat earth sings an eerie tune. This new soundscape is the composer’s attempt to put this idea into sound!

This is a tour-de-force for the advancing string orchestra. Beautiful, dramatic, and flowing, Waterloo Station is very fresh and contemporary. Students will love it for the lush harmonic textures and rhythmic drive that this composer is so noted for.Composed as a characterization of the fast-paced atmosphere of London’s Waterloo Train Station, this fast-slow-fast piece combines technical excitement with heartfelt simplicity. The fast section in G minor consists of two main parts: the intense, emotional A section at m. 21 and the legato, sweeping B section at m. 59. The syncopated tutti figures in the high strings coupled with the fiery cello and bass lines propel the fast sections. The phrase in mm. 1–8 recurs throughout. Making four- to eight-measure exercises of this section below tempo in the violins and viola, focusing on rhythmic clarity, will help to lock in the syncopation. Similarly, the cello and bass should rehearse this slowly as well as mm. 9–16 to gain fluidity and insure a solid foundation. The cellos carry the tune at m. 71, and the ensemble builds from mm. 79–86 to the transition at m. 87. An abrupt change to half tempo here slows the momentum and transitions to a quiet, melancholy tone in m. 91. The middle section (ABA) begins in G minor with a somber quality, highlighted by the Violin I solo. It gradually builds to a beautiful, uplifting setting as it moves to G major in m. 100. Returning back to the hushed G minor tonality, it then speeds up again and transitions back to Tempo I for a brief recapitulation of the fast section. Measure 117 marks the return to vigorous playing, beginning softly and building to a thrilling ride to the end.

Virginia Croft's experience as a string player and educator is evident in the care with which she has scored this beautiful folk tune idiomatically for young string players. Relatively easy to play, Skye Boat Song is a great opportunity to develop lyrical playing habits with a developing string group. Here is a very playable setting of a beautiful Scottish folk song. It commemorates one of the most exciting moments in Scottish history in the middle of the eighteenth century during the Jacobite Rebellion. At this time, a small group of men escaped by night in a tiny boat across the rough sea to the Isle of Skye to save the life of the young lad whom they believed to be the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland. As you play this music, can't you feel the boat rocking and the oarsmen straining at their posts against the sea? The long diminuendo from m. 51 to the end passes the final melodic fragment down through the voices until the small boat has vanished into the distance, leaving only the water. The words of the original folk song are:Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wind;Hark, how the seagulls cray!Carry the lad that was born to be kindOver the sea to Skye!.

From the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, Path to the Pacific reflects the open, airy and picturesque qualities of the American West. These textures are painted through the use of light syncopation, key modulations and triplets that will certainly ch.From the opening driving cello melody to the final ensemble flourish, Path to the Pacific is an exciting and rewarding piece for young players to play. The accents in the cello during the lively introduction at m. 1 are integral to the feel of the melodic line and provide an engaging technical challenge. The AAB form begins as the piece decrescendos to the quiet ‘A’ section at m. 9, featuring violin 1 with a singing, lyrical melody. The robust, joyous ‘B’ section is played with intensity, but still legato. The return to the ‘A’ material at m. 37 features the Cello. The 2nd statement of the ‘B’ material at m. 45 is highlighted by a refreshing tonal shift to the key of E then back to the key of ‘G’ before the crescendo to the fermata in m. 58.The active cello theme from the introduction returns in the A Tempo section at m. 59 at a piano dynamic. This begins the build to the maestoso section at m. 71. Measures 63-70 are the most aggressive bars of the composition. Strive for rhythmic precision when approaching the quintal harmony in m. 63-64, the accented figures in m. 65-67, and the triplet figures in m. 68-69. A rich, resonant tone from the full ensemble will make the maestoso section in m. 71 move powerfully to the final bar.

Arches is a piece for the developing string orchestra that derives its title from the national park in Utah. I visited the Arches National Monument in June of 2003 during a cross-country trip. The Delicate Arch is the recognizable landmark from this beautiful national park. In order to see this remarkable natural formation up close, you have to hike a trail of over two miles. The music in this piece is inspired by my journey to see the arch. Once there, you are treated to a vast panoramic view of the golden Utah landscape that leaves one breathless. Arches is an effective piece in teaching pizzicato playing as a melodic device. Most often, pizzicato is used as an effect or punctuation mark to larger melodic ideas. There is a brief arco section to provide contrast and build up to the dramatic return of the main pizzicato melody. Each section in the ensemble has a statement of the melody. It is important to think linearly in addition to vertically when playing these pizzicato lines. Forward motion is of up-most importance in terms of making musical phrases out of these pizzicato lines.Arches is a piece for the developing string orchestra that derives its title from the national park in Utah.
