Cliffhanger is a programmatic work for string orchestra that harkens back to the days of silent film. One of the lasting images of that time period is the Saturday afternoon matinee, where each episode ended on a cliffhanger until it could be continued next week. This piece tells the familiar story of the damsel in distress who is tied up to the train tracks as a train is approaching. The opening of the piece sets the scene with danger and desperation. By m. 6, our hero is making his way on horseback to rescue the fair maiden. This main melody is developed and passed around the ensemble until m. 36, at which point despair sets in. The music is rich with romantic harmonies and inner lines. Be sure to bring out these inner lines to add to the passion and drama of the moment. It continues to build until a thunderous arrival at m. 49. From there we return to our hero, who is now getting close to the train tracks to save the fair maiden. The tension becomes the highest at m. 61, when we are still not sure if our hero will make it in time. But alas, at m. 68 he swoops in to save the day and rescue the fair maiden. Of course, they live happily ever after. My hope is that your ensemble will have some fun with this style of music. It was adapted from an arrangement I wrote for the new pipe organ at the Walk Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. They wanted some scary train music to show children how the organ was used back before movies had sound. Strings provide a heightened sense of drama with this genre of music.

The mezzo piano in m. 5 introduces the theme and slowly builds until m. 37, where the dynamic indication is forte. English comments: This is the definitive version of Biogenesis, a piece that Cervello had written in 1976, together with his friend Jorge Wagensberg, and which was awarded the First Prize at the Spanish Ministry for Education and Science's Permanent Composition and Musical Research Competition. The new version was made at 1984-85 Lux et umbra is written for a string group consisting of four first and four second violins, three violas, three cellos and a double bass. The conceptual battle between darkness and light is represented by the instability between the notes B and C, and by the compartmentation of the group of fifteen strings into divisi that provide an independent arrangement for each instrument, thus bestowing great substance upon the texture of the music. A cello cadence emerges from a slow and straightforward beginning. A process of contrasts then begins, culminating in a molto vivace passage of a scherzando nature, which alludes to the Baroque concerti grossi. The music once again plays with chiaroscuro until reaching its climax, from which point the conclusion slowly begins, establishing itself in the high register until fading away. The work was first performed at Barcelona's Palau de la Musica by the English Chamber Orchestra, directed by Enrique Garcia Asensio, in 1987. That same year, in the newspaper El Pais, the observations of the composer and critic Francesc Taverna-Bech paid tribute to the work's intelligence as regards the use of and search for instrumental resources (in this case, string instruments, about which Cervello knows a great deal), the skill involved in endowing the lyrical line with tension, and a singular touch that confers formal essence upon the musical discourse. In La Vanguardia, Jordi Llovet wrote that this is a work in which, as is the case with most of Cervello's compositions, the listener finds something covertly religious, a mysterious secret, a transcendence linked to the origins of communication requiring more than a single being, which provides excitement. In 1990, when the Orquesta de Granada (Orchestra of Granada) performed the work at Barcelona's Grec festival, the critic Cesar Calmell opined, in the same newspaper, that inch by inch, surely and imperturbably, Cervello built up a perfect world that reflects the image of the craftsman who, so astonished at the delights of his trade, is unable to do anything but turn the very backdrop of tragedy into something pleasant. Lux et umbra was recorded by the Orchestra Estatal of the Hermitage, conducted by Alexis Soriano (CD SA01210 Fundacion Autor). Chamber Suite, for string orchestra, is an adaptation of Mason’s 2nd String Quartet. The addition of the double bass adds more harmonic richness in all the movements and is particularly apparent in the lush 2nd movement. Chamber Suite offers string orchestras rhythmic and technical challenges but with a very accessible language. This is music that appeals to wide range of audiences with its energy and unique, coherent musical language of its own. It keeps the listener’s interest right to the end. The 1st movement engages from the opening bar with fast paced, off kilter 7/8 tutti rhythms and sharp-edged harmonies. This is a kind of musical caffeine living between tonal and polytonalism with rich, sliding chords and a haunting middle section reminiscent of Armenian folks tunes. The 2nd movement offers emotional storytelling with clear tonality but with moments of more complex stacked harmonies and tension. The 3rd movement is lively with raw energy. Voices are rapidly interchanged in a dance of weaving motivic development until the satisfying rush of notes to the end.string orchestra Duration: 15' Composed: 2020 Published by: Todd Mason Performance materials available on rental:.

Exploring mature harmonies while a single note lingers throughout the entire work, this powerful piece will leave you breathless. Orchestrated for strings and piano, the music moves through a series of sections that become increasingly intense, all while the note G sounds nonstop from the first measure until the final chord. The haunting sound of voices (members of the ensemble) eventually fade into a soft hum before the music reaches is final chord and ultimate resolution. Simply stunning.

Virginia Croft's experience as a string player and educator is evident in the care with which she has scored this beautiful folk tune idiomatically for young string players. Relatively easy to play, Skye Boat Song is a great opportunity to develop lyrical playing habits with a developing string group. Here is a very playable setting of a beautiful Scottish folk song. It commemorates one of the most exciting moments in Scottish history in the middle of the eighteenth century during the Jacobite Rebellion. At this time, a small group of men escaped by night in a tiny boat across the rough sea to the Isle of Skye to save the life of the young lad whom they believed to be the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland. As you play this music, can't you feel the boat rocking and the oarsmen straining at their posts against the sea? The long diminuendo from m. 51 to the end passes the final melodic fragment down through the voices until the small boat has vanished into the distance, leaving only the water. The words of the original folk song are:Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wind;Hark, how the seagulls cray!Carry the lad that was born to be kindOver the sea to Skye!.

Julian Lloyd Webber writes: My father composed his four part song The Moon in 1959 to words by W.H Davies. The text — as in so many of his word settings — equates nature with humanity: Thy beauty haunts me, heart and soul. Although The Moon remained unperformed until his centenary year in 2014 he evidently felt strongly enough about it to create this miniature for string orchestra. This work has been recorded in a performance conducted by Julian Lloyd Webber, available from Naxos: No. 8.573250.A miniature for String OrchestraEdited by Julian Lloyd WebberThis set includes a full score plus a set of 10 parts: 3 x violin 1, 2 x violin 2, 2 x viola, 2 x cello, 1 x double bass.Additional parts are available from Clifton Edition.Former Spartan Press Cat. One of the most beloved of all Christmas carols is presented in an easy, yet beautiful arrangement by Roy Phillippe. Every sections is given a chance to play the melody in the very playable setting. The optional piano part adds interest and colorful lines to this already very special piece.I am of the opinion that a piece of music is not judged by how difficult it is to play, but by how good it sounds. While my arrangement of Silent Night is written for beginning string players, I have tried to keep it interesting for all players. It should be played warmly with expression to create a full sound. The piece begins with an introduction based on the three-note Silent Night motive. The main melody is introduced in m. 5 by the first Violins, and is harmonized by the second Violins and Violas. The Cellos reiterate the motive in mm. 6,8,10 and 11. Beginning at m.12 the motive alternates between the Violin II and the Cellos. The melody is played tutti until the key change at m.29, at which point when the Cellos and Basses take the melody with light accompaniment in the Violins and Violas. The final statement of the melody is played by the first violins beginning in m. 37. The Silent Night motive from the beginning alternates between Violin II and the Cellos to the end.

This arrangement uses the main themes of the second and third movements of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. It opens with the haunting Adagio sostenuto. At measure 16, the third movement's rhapsodic main theme is introduced and developed. At measure 57, we return to the Adagio melody with the Moderato theme merging and dominating until measure 74 when the work closes with the initial theme. The Moderato theme is among the most beloved melodies of the 20th Century. Both themes in Rach 2 were featured in several movies. In first position for young people, this musical setting demonstrates the fluid relationship of 3 triplets against 2 eighth notes and the development of a long melodic line.

Spring Song is a celebration of the arrival of spring, a renewal of life from the death of the old year. The basic structure of this piece is classical Sonata form. The opening represents winter and this section contains the motives that are the seeds for spring. The music does not really take flight until the development section where march-like textures punctuated by string fanfares propel the music forward. The recapitulation is transformed as the themes reappear in a different order and use the march-like elements from the development. The coda acts as a tranquil recall of the opening music as four solo strings take on the guise of birds singing in contentment in the summer sun.
