Sibelius composed this short (only five minutes long) Romance in C Op. 42 in 1903; the work was first performed in Turku in March 1904. The Romance is not a concerto movement in disguise, but features the dark, dense string writing typical of Sibelius. Nearly all of the orchestral arrangements were made years after the original compositions for voice and piano.Yet even though the arrangements were made in a very short period of time Sibelius handled the combination of solo voice and orchestra in all songs with equal mastery sometimes creating dark and dramatic atmospheres (in Pa verandan vid havet) sometimes radiant colorful impressions (in Soluppgang) or light-colored transparent textures (in Varen flyktar hastigt) and always basing his ideas on the poetic idea of the song while discovering refined ways of supporting it.

A salute to the famous sailboat race, this rollicking piece in A minor introduces compound time with an opening (and closing) section in 12/8. The fast flowing music of the opening, vividly suggestive of a ship slicing through the waves, returns in a higher key (B minor) after a warmly scored, sweepingly melodic middle section. This is a piece whose sophistication is an excellent showcase for a more advanced performing group.Written in 12/8 in A minor, America’s Cup evokes the intensity and momentum of a wild sea with driving triplets, sweeping melodies, and accented downbeats. The A-material from the opening measure is played aggressively but lightly enough to keep the feeling of forward motion. Strong accents and rhythmically precise playing in the cello and bass provide solid support for the fast moving violin and viola passages. Measure 67 begins the slow, pastoral setting of the B-material. A gentle, lyrical violin motive in A major grows into a high, sweeping melody over sustained harmonies. This provides a brief repose before returning to the fastoriginal tempo and minor key as the recapitulation begins at m. 90. A modulation to B minor (m. 94) lifts the energy of the piece and gives young players the challenge of playing the running lines in another key. Measure 118 builds to the end, keeping the intensity a soft dynamic and growing into the final syncopated tutti unison figure in mm. 122–123.

Following the Renaissance volume, this time it is Baroque works (more precisely, transcriptions of Baroque vocal and instrumental works) that are presented in the Leggierissimo series, extending the repertoire of junior string orchestras. Roughly half of the selection consists of well-known pieces by the greatest composers of the period (Purcell: Dido and Aeneas, Rameau: Pi ces de clavecin, Händel: Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks, J.S. Bach: B major partita, C major orchestral suite), but works by composers less well known nowadays (for example, G. Böhm and J. C. F. Fischer) are also included, together with such unusual items as Polish, German and Hungarian dancesfrom 17th- and 18th-century Hungarian manuscripts: the Kájoni and Vietórisz codexes, and Eleonóra Lányi s music book.

Tchaikovsky spent the summer and autumn of 1880 at his sisterÂs country estate in KamÂianka, Ukraine, where he sought peace and relaxation. But after a short time the desire to work took hold of him again. âI'm sketching a symphony or string quintet just now; I don't know where it's going yet,â he wrote to his friend and patroness Nadezhda von Meck. In the end it turned out to be a Serenade for String Orchestra, which numbers among his most beautiful inspirations and is today a central work in the genre. The four movements captivate with their diverse moods â be it the Mozartian first movement âin the form of a sonatinaâ, the elegant Waltz, the melancholy âElegiaâ or the rousing Finale. For this new source-critical edition it was possible to consult the autograph in Moscow as well as the early printed editions into which Tchaikovsky sometimes entered a number of minor revisions. An absolute classic for strings, this version is in C major to avoid forward extensions for viola and violoncello. There is nothing out of first position except for a simple shift for violoncello and bass in a brief passage. A solo string quartet section gives the work a truly Baroque feel.

One of the most recognizable folk songs of all-time is presented in a fine new Doris Gazda arrangment for beginning strings. Optional part for bells, tone blocks or chimes will give you the opportunity to involve other students in performing with the string orchestra. The Volga River is the longest river in Europe (about 2,300 miles long) and the principal waterway of Russia. The Volga has played an important part in the life of the Russian people, and in Russian folklore is called Mother Volga. For centuries it has served as the chief thoroughfare of Russia and as the lifeline of Russian colonization to the east. It carries one-half of the total river freight of Russia and irrigates the vast steppes of the lower Volga region. Grain, building materials, salt, fish and caviar (from the Volga delta and the Caspian Sea) are shipped upstream; lumber is the main commodity shipped downstream. The folk song The Volga Boatman is supposed to represent the rhythmic rowing of the hard-working oarsmen who took their boats and rafts up and down this long waterway. The boats carried goods for trade, travelers and the armies and invaders who fought throughout the Russian lands.Close your eyes while you listen to the song. Imagine that you have a boat carrying grain and fish for a long distance. Then pretend you are rowing your boat in rhythm to the melody.
