The fast paced rondo has a Dorian flavored melody with hints of quartel (based on an interval of a fourth) harmony to give it a contemporary sound The players are presented with solo opportunities as well as harmonic turns and twists that will keep them.Rondo in the Nick of Time was originally the third movement for a woodwind quintet piece that I wrote in 1990. I have always been fond of this little piece and felt that it would adapt well to larger ensembles. I have also scored this piece for band as part of a suite called Upon a New Horizon. The main theme is based on the Dorian Mode. The use of quartal harmony makes up most of the harmonic material. Each statement of the theme is followed by an episode that increases in length each time. There is a sudden change of style and tempo in the middle of the piece, where fragments of the theme are developed. The title is a play-on-words, since the work contains hemiola effects that alter the feel of the time.As with all of my pieces for strings, the bowings are given only as a reference. Feel free to alter them to fit the needs of your students. I have indicated a rather fast tempo for the piece. I really like the piece to fly, but it will work and sound fine at a slower tempo as well. Just endeavor to keep their energy moving forward. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope that you and your students enjoy it and find it useful in your program.-Larry ClarkLakeland, FL. 2005.

Virginia Croft's experience as a string player and educator is evident in the care with which she has scored this beautiful folk tune idiomatically for young string players. Relatively easy to play, Skye Boat Song is a great opportunity to develop lyrical playing habits with a developing string group. Here is a very playable setting of a beautiful Scottish folk song. It commemorates one of the most exciting moments in Scottish history in the middle of the eighteenth century during the Jacobite Rebellion. At this time, a small group of men escaped by night in a tiny boat across the rough sea to the Isle of Skye to save the life of the young lad whom they believed to be the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland. As you play this music, can't you feel the boat rocking and the oarsmen straining at their posts against the sea? The long diminuendo from m. 51 to the end passes the final melodic fragment down through the voices until the small boat has vanished into the distance, leaving only the water. The words of the original folk song are:Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wind;Hark, how the seagulls cray!Carry the lad that was born to be kindOver the sea to Skye!.

With this arrangement, my goal is to maintain the integrity of the original work, while making it accessible to the younger orchestra. An important aspect of the successful performance of this piece is maintaining an energetic tempo. The repeated eighth notes in the accompaniment should be played cleanly and crisply to maintain momentum. There are many places where abrupt changes in dynamics occur. For example, m. 1 begins with a string unison forte, which suddenly drops to piano at m. 11. Accents, staccatos, and other articulations should be carefully observed. To be effective, crescendos should begin at a reasonable volume, so they have somewhere to go dynamically. I hope you and the orchestra enjoy this arrangement. With this arrangement, my goal is to maintain the integrity of the original work, while making it accessible to the younger orchestra. Cliffhanger is a programmatic work for string orchestra that harkens back to the days of silent film. One of the lasting images of that time period is the Saturday afternoon matinee, where each episode ended on a cliffhanger until it could be continued next week. This piece tells the familiar story of the damsel in distress who is tied up to the train tracks as a train is approaching. Nicely done!.Cliffhanger is a programmatic work for string orchestra that harkens back to the days of silent film. One of the lasting images of that time period is the Saturday-afternoon matinee, where each episode ended on a cliffhanger until it could be continued next week. This piece tells the familiar story of the damsel in distress who is tied up to the train tracks as a train is approaching. The opening of the piece sets the scene with danger and desperation. By m. 6, our hero is making his way on horseback to rescue the fair maiden. This main melody is developed and passed around the ensemble until m. 36, at which point despair sets in. The music is rich with romantic harmonies and inner lines. Be sure to bring out these inner lines to add to the passion and drama of the moment. It continues to build until a thunderous arrival at m. 49. From there we return to our hero, who is now getting close to the train tracks to save the fair maiden. The tension becomes the highest at m. 61, when we are still not sure if our hero will make it in time. But alas, at m. 68 he swoops in to save the day and rescue the fair maiden. Of course, they live happily ever after. My hope is that your ensemble will have some fun with this style of music. It was adapted from an arrangement I wrote for the new pipe organ at the Walk Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. They wanted some scary train music to show children how the organ was used back before movies had sound. Strings provide a heightened sense of drama with this genre of music.

A salute to the famous sailboat race, this rollicking piece in A minor introduces compound time with an opening (and closing) section in 12/8. The fast flowing music of the opening, vividly suggestive of a ship slicing through the waves, returns in a higher key (B minor) after a warmly scored, sweepingly melodic middle section. This is a piece whose sophistication is an excellent showcase for a more advanced performing group.Written in 12/8 in A minor, America’s Cup evokes the intensity and momentum of a wild sea with driving triplets, sweeping melodies, and accented downbeats. The A-material from the opening measure is played aggressively but lightly enough to keep the feeling of forward motion. Strong accents and rhythmically precise playing in the cello and bass provide solid support for the fast moving violin and viola passages. Measure 67 begins the slow, pastoral setting of the B-material. A gentle, lyrical violin motive in A major grows into a high, sweeping melody over sustained harmonies. This provides a brief repose before returning to the fastoriginal tempo and minor key as the recapitulation begins at m. 90. A modulation to B minor (m. 94) lifts the energy of the piece and gives young players the challenge of playing the running lines in another key. Measure 118 builds to the end, keeping the intensity a soft dynamic and growing into the final syncopated tutti unison figure in mm. 122–123.

A strong new composition for advancing groups, this dark and mysterious piece is both lyrical and lush. Reminiscent of Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns, this work would be a great addition to any fall concert!.Diabolique (Dya- baw- leek), a. 1. Of the Devil 2. Fiendish: devilish: wicked.Danse Diabolique is a moody piece. It is meant to evoke images of a moonlit Halloween night, alive with fiendish creatures engaged in a demonic dance. Inspired by the work of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, this piece is best characterized by the expressive marking, sinister. The melody of this 6/8 piece is played in a smooth, legato style in contrast to the crisp pizzicato accompaniment. Care should be taken never to rush the pizzicato passages. Dynamics should be emphasized throughout, and sixteenth notes should be played off the string, with accuracy, in a spiccato style.

A warm and richly scored setting of the popular Christmas carol Bring a Torch Jeanette, Isabella, this full sounding arrangement will greatly enrich seasonal programming. Roy Phillippe has employed a broad palette of harmonic and instrumental colors to craft a memorable holiday selection.Bring a Torch is a lovely Christmas carol. Using techniques such as suspensions, re-harmonization and modulations, my goal is to provide an interesting showcase for this familiar melody. the introduction in F major features sustained violins with a pattern of moving eighth notes in the violas and cellos. This pattern recurs throughout the piece. The first statement of the melody is in the first violins. The second violins supply harmonic support along with the viola/cello pattern. Measures 13-29 feature a section of tutti chordal playing. Measure 30 crescendos into the modulation to D major at m. 32. Here, the dynamic is forte, and the viola/cello pattern returns. At m. 40, the violas and cellos have the melody with violin accompaniment. A crescendo begins at m. 44 and builds to fortissimo at m. 48, featuring a modulation to G major. At this point the melody should soar. A descrescendo at m. 60 is followed by a ritard at m. 64. The final four measures are in the original tempo ending on a tutti chord.Careful attention to dynamics, especially in the accompanying parts, will result in a fine performance.
