A truly masterful fantasy on an English folk song, this piece shows the exceptional musical development found in many of the greatest classical symphonies. The fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo (ABACA) and features fine counterpoint and engaging melodies. This piece can be played in an orchestral and quartet setting and is both challenging and fun to play.My Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of Fife was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. Life being what is it, she eventually gave up the violin and chose a completely different career for herself-though we are still the best of friends! I found the song in a collection of folk songs for children where it is called Rissoldy Rossoldy. Except for a few notes, the song was almost identical to the English folksong The Wee Cooper of Fife, which begins: There was a Wee Cooper named Fife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / He took him to wed a gentle wife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / She would na card she would na spin / for fear 't would harm her gentle skin.... The tune is rollicking and words are amusing, and yes, eventually they worked out their problems! The Fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo, which is ABACA coda, such as one finds in the last movements of some of Haydn's later symphonies. This composition may be performed by a string orchestra or solo string quartet. - Douglas Townsend.MyA Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of FifeA was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. Moonlight Shadows is a passionate and colorful piece for strings that explores the expressive power of the string orchestra. Sean O'Loughlin uses a lush harmonic palette and variety of texture (including a short pizzicato section), to create an important and soulful addition to the repertoire for younger string ensembles. Duration: 2'30.Moonlight Shadows is a work for string orchestra that reflects my great love for the music of Samuel Barber. His compositions from the 1930s and 1940s were characterized by plush harmonies, flowing melodies and engaging suspensions. These elements are what I focused on in the composition of Moonlight Shadows. The material represents my mood and feelings when I look at a big, bright moon. The shadows it casts create an eerie feeling, while at the same time providing a deep, rich tapestry for the earth at night. The harmony features many major seventh-chords with half-step suspensions. These suspensions function as common tones to the next chord and create the tension of the piece. They also move, in order to provide resolution to the piece which allows the listener to rest. With this in mind, these suspensions should be brought out during performance.Moonlight Shadows is an emotional piece that allows the young musician the opportunity to play with much expression.

In setting Richard Dehmel's poem âVerklärte Nachtâ (Transfigured Night) in his op. 4, the young Arnold Schönberg pursued the intention, as he himself said, of âattempting those new forms in chamber music which have been created in orchestral music based on a poetic ideaâ. Composed in September 1899 in a few weeks whilst he was on holiday, the Sextet incorporates the ideas of the symphonic poem in its programmatic character and its one-movement form, and also displays late Romantic traits in its opulent tone. Already at its premiere in 1902 in Vienna, the special quality of the work was recognised, characterised by âpeculiar sound combinations and groundbreaking figuresâ, a work which was to become a true modern classic in the 20th century. For this Urtext edition, both the autograph score and the 1905 first edition have been consulted, as well as Schönberg's personal copies which are preserved in Vienna and contain numerous markings by the composer.

A walk through the park or a morning stroll through the forest is what this piece best calls to mind. With its pastoral setting and lush melodies, Velvet Morning will truly showcase your group's mastery of legato playing.Velvet Morning is a warm and colorful work for string orchestra. Please play con sordino if available. The music is a reflection of my love for the orchestral music of Barber, Ravel, Debussy and Satie. It should have the same sense of passion and intensity that those masters employ in their music. The opening tempo is marked rubato, and should speed up then slow down based on the phrases. The main melody appears at m. 11 in the first violins and should have a flowing quality. The harmony does utilize some slight dissonances from time to time which should be emphasized. The violas and cellos take over the melody at m.19 with a counter line in the violins. The melody returns to the violin at m. 27 with a pianistic cello line punctuated by pizzicato in the bass. Some transitional material follows that builds up to a full presentation at m. 47. Let the ensemble open up here with an intense, full sound. This winds down to a return of the introduction at m. 60. The ending should be tender and deliberate all the way to the last plush chord.

Virginia Croft has taken a popular German canon and transformed it into a stunning new piece for young string groups. It begins with the canon as is, and then adds two other composed themes that complement the original tune. With its largely contrapuntal composition, this piece is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their independence.“All things shall perish from under the skyMusic alone shall live, music alone shall live,Music alone shall live, never to die.â€Here is an exciting treatment of a well-known simple canonic melody, first stated in its entirety by the cellos. As it passes through the voices, it should predominate over the accompanying embellishments, resulting in an energetic and exciting presentation of an old tune. What a wonderful way to teach the harmonic aspects of canonic melody while offering a lively and enjoyable experience for both performers and audience.

Elgar's Serenade for Strings was composed in 1892 and represents the first of his works with which the 35-year-old composer was truly satisfied. Whether, as often claimed, it derives from three pieces for strings from 1888 can no longer be ascertained, since only the titles of those pieces âSpring Songâ, âElegyâ and âFinaleâ, have come down to us. However, these titles would also characterise the movements of the Serenade surprisingly well. Posterity shares Elgar's positive assessment to the present day: the Serenade op. 20 is not only one of his most popular compositions, but is among the most frequently played works in the string-orchestra literature. Edited by British Elgar specialist Rupert Marshall-Luck, this classic now appears in Henle Urtext as conducting score, performance material and handy study edition.

The volumes in the Leggierissimo series, each containing works by a different composer, are now followed by albums presenting easily playable music from the various historical periods: renaissance, baroque, Viennese classicism and romanticism. The selection of renaissance music includes not only instrumental dances but also transcriptions of what were originally vocal pieces (well-known chansons). The volume also contains dance movements that can be paired together, and for individual performances cycles of several movements can be assembled from pieces taken from the same collection.
