Timo Juhani Kyllonen developed this string orchestra work from a one-movement string quartet commissioned for the Kuhmo Festival. Its title refers to the awakening of nature of spring and of birdsong at dawn. Melody plays an important role in supporting the idea of a continuous stream or flow, while harmony and polyphony are used colouristically and as elements promoting formal unity.

Ida Moberg (1859-1947) was the first widely educated female Finnish composer. Born in Helsinki she grew up in a musical family and studied singing and piano at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Later the studies continued: composing and singing at the Helsinki Orchestra School, composing at the Royal Musical Academy in Dresden, improvisation in Berlin and pedagogue in Hellerau. Stillhet (Swedish for Silence), a short cradle song for string orchestra is extracted from her unfinished opera Asiens ljus (The Light of Asia), based on a text by Viktor Rydberg about Buddhism. Stillhet is also suitable for pupil orchestra (duration c. 2,5 minutes).

Nearly all of the orchestral arrangements were made years after the original compositions for voice and piano.

Yet even though the arrangements were made in a very short period of time Sibelius handled the combination of solo voice and orchestra in all songs with equal mastery sometimes creating dark and dramatic atmospheres (in Pa verandan vid havet) sometimes radiant colorful impressions (in Soluppgang) or light-colored transparent textures (in Varen flyktar hastigt) and always basing his ideas on the poetic idea of the song while discovering refined ways of supporting it.

A new edition of one of Berkeley's most frequently performed works, in this the composer's centenary year. This work is a classic in the repertoire of British Music for this medium. The first movement has the sparkling elegance of Mozart whom Berkeley idolised, but also the driving rhythm of a Bach Brandenburg Concerto; the second is a serenade; the third a kind of scherzo; but the final movement seems to reflect the tragic war years with a slow reminiscence of the opening theme at the very end. Elegy for Strings is a set of variations, or developments of the musical material exposed in the first 34 measures of the piece. Two climaxes are relevant in this piece: as the piece becomes more intense and is ascending in dynamics the first solo violin appears after the first climax. The work ends with a kind of funeral march unfolding tree different textures: Violin Solo, First Violins playing long notes in the background sul tasto and with mutes. The rest of the strings perform an obstinato which starts to break the 3/4 meter pattern already present in the entire piece and suddenly replaced by a binary meter. Finally and progressively, the strings fade from the lower registers to the higher sounds letting free the soloist disappear in the silence.
