Traditionally a string quartet will not readily take on pop music. But times are changing and the classic quartet line-up proves suitable for beautiful arrangements of contemporary songs as well. This book features three hits from past decades, The Rose (Bette Midler) with its simple, pure sounds and underlying harmonies, La Solitudine (Laura Pausini) - compelling and with a hidden energy and finally Wonderwall (Oasis), an unexpected choice, with its persistent rhythmic background. To allow the string quartet to play together with optional guitar or keyboard, chord symbols have been added in the score. These songs - which certainly have a passionate andromantic ring to them - are ideal for receptions, weddings and other festive occasions. (Position 1-5).

Improvisational energy inherent in music that spouts The Savage Mind, which is mentioned by Japanese musicologist and anthopologist Masakuni Kitazawa in his book Sound as Metaphor, always fascinates me. One of the aims of writing this work was to test whether a highly refined medium like a string quartet can produce the energy. 'Inherent in music' mentioned above can be restated as 'inherent in human being.' Beyond the intellectual inquiring mind, I hope this worl is strongly connected to 'living in the present.' String Quartet No. 2 is in three movements. The 1st movement engages from the opening bar with fast paced, off kilter 7/8 tutti rhythms and sharp-edged harmonies. This is a kind of musical caffeine living between tonal and polytonalism with rich, sliding chords and a haunting middle section reminiscent of Armenian folks tunes. The 2nd movement offers emotional storytelling with clear tonality but with moments of more complex stacked harmonies and tension. The 3rd movement is lively with raw energy. Voices are rapidly interchanged in a dance of weaving motivic development until the satisfying rush of notes to the end.String Quartet Duration: 15' Composed: 2019 Published by: Todd Mason String Quartet No. 2 (Youtube):.

Duddell's short string quartet made up of four mere bagatelles is a treat for both players and audiences. First performed by the Psophos Quartet at the 2007 Presteigne Festival and recently transcribed for string orchestra, Duddell embraces the historical weight of the prestigious string quartet medium by alluding to a wealth of masterpieces by Mozart, Stravinsky, Debussy, Beethoven, Tippett and Webern. Despite these acknowledged references, the music is still distinctly Duddell's, with catchy melodic lines, tender harmonies and rhythmic energy. This is a fantastic new work for young quartets interested in new repertoire.

String Quartet No. 3 is in one continuous movement and represents some harmonic and structural experimentation by the composer. The work plays out a bit like a tone poem for string quartet. Mason says This work blends tonal, polytonal and atonal material. My goal was to create new sounds but with a driving suspense and energy from the very first chords to the very end to take the listener on a kind of cosmic tour to different worlds of mystery, longing, warmth, and even triumph. This piece is suggested for advanced level players. YouTube link with the Lyris Quartet performing this work:: 2 vn, vla, vcl Duration: 14' Composed: 2021 Published by: Todd Mason.

The second of the Quartets commissioned by the Naxos label was completed in January 2003. This work swings between nervous virtuosic energy to the serene calm of an extended Lento, with exotic harmonies reminiscent of Bartok, and is characterised by it's sharp and unpredictable contrasts. First performed by the Maggini Quartet on 11 July 2003 at the Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, as part of the Cheltenham International Festival. This is the score in a pocket-size format. The set of parts is available, catalogue number CH66594-01.

Scored For String Quartet. Commissioned by the New Arts String Quartet, first performed in Tokyo November 1996. Quoting Tanaka: The title Metal Strings suggests speed metal rock music which I have been listening to a lot in recent years. I find an explosive energy in its music that people of today thirst for. Previously I have explored solid, speedy and metallic sound in pieces such as 'Wave Mechanics' (1994), 'Wave Mechanics II' (1994) and 'Metalic Crystal' (1994-95). This idea has been extended and developed in my string quartet, Metal Strings. Score only edition, separate parts are also available on sale.
