This string quartet is the last work completed by this fine American composer. The work's five movements are based on old folk and hymn melodies that the composer found intriguing. In the final movement, he combines the old melody with one of his own creation, to bring an especially original flavor to an old form. Stirring and lyrical, this has a myriad of programming options.

Commissioned by the SWR for the series attacca - geistesgegenwart music and premiered by the Minguet Quartet in Stuttgart in 2017,this work is the composer's second contribution to the premier genre of classical electronic music. In the sheet music edition, the through-composed one-movement form is framed by a quote each of Albert Camus and Friedrich Nietzsche on loneliness and fulfilment through the artistic act of creation. This form develops over an uninterrupted ostinato with initially simple intervals to which aregradually added intricate harmonies, garlands and playing effects and which increase and fade away at the end.

The piece is part of the ballet Wild Swans, choreographed by Meryl Tankard at the Sydney Opera House in 2002, based on the fairy tale The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. Originally scored for soprano and orchestra, Eliza Aria introduces Princess Elisa and expresses her pure soul, innocence and belief in the goodness of the world: Without saying a word, she must weave stinging nettles into cloth to save her enchanted brothers. The short, enchanting vocalise is perhaps Elena Kats-Chernin's best-known creation and went around the world as music in a promotional video on YouTube. It is now available in numerous versions for `ifferent instruments and instrumentations.

French.
Born in 1948 in Rome, Philippe Hersant studied music at the Paris Conservatory, notably in the composition class of Andre Jolivet, before residing at the Casa Velasquez from 1970 to 1972 and then at the Villa Medici from 1978 to 1980. Since 1973 he has been a producer for radio broadcasts with France Musiques. Refusing to play tricks with history, Philippe Hersant has forged a language that extends the course of Western music as a whole, and, without ever seeking to establish a school, he was one of the first of his generation to place himself, once more, in the domain of tonality and modality. He does not, for all that, banish all neo-classical tendencies. On the contrary, he champions the mannerism and the deep subjectivity of his memory as sources and guides to creation.
