The second of the Quartets commissioned by the Naxos label was completed in January 2003. This work swings between nervous virtuosic energy to the serene calm of an extended Lento, with exotic harmonies reminiscent of Bartok, and is characterised by it's sharp and unpredictable contrasts. First performed by the Maggini Quartet on 11 July 2003 at the Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, as part of the Cheltenham International Festival. This is the score in a pocket-size format. The set of parts is available, catalogue number CH66594-01.

The Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy pursues the goal of making accessible to the public in an adequately scholarly form all of Mendelssohn's accessible compositions, letters and writings, along with all other documents of his artistic oeuvre. A considerable number of Mendelssohn's works are still waiting to be published; many others have been published in an unsatisfactory manner.Though the new Mendelssohn Complete Edition follows the ten volumes of the Leipziger Mendelssohn Ausgabe (LMA) published by the Deutscher Verlag fur Musik (DVfM) in Leipzig since 1961, it sees itself as a fundamentally new conception which reflects the present-day standard of scholarly editions. The first volumes of the new Complete Edition were presented in Leipzig on 3 November 1997 at Mendelssohn Festtage in Leipzig.SON 411 - 413 have been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2006.Editorial Board: Christian Martin Schmidt (chairman), Peter Ward Jones, Friedhelm Krummacher, R. String Quartet No.1 - 'Quartetto Breve' (1952) by Per Norgard. Programme note: The spectrum of sound, the gesticulation - in short, the very nature of the strings - has always had a central place in my output, demonstrated by the numbers of string quartets, concertos with string soloist, chamber and solo works. The interest dates back to my school years, when I was fortunate to be able to compose for a cello-playing schoolmate and to accompany him on the piano. I discovered then the innumerable nuances of sound and playing varieties offered by just one bow, four strings and five fingers.. My first string quartet - Quartetto Breve - has a firm root in the Nordictradition and is strongly inspired by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) and my teacher Vagn Holmboe (1909-96). Per Norgard (1998) .

The editor, Engelbert Rontgen, writes in his foreword:Following a commission by the gentlemen Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig to produce a complete edition of Beethoven's string quartets supplied with bowing marks and fingerings, I undertook this task on the basis of the critical complete edition of these quartets, published in 1862. First of all, it seemed necessary to change the original slurring in some places to suit the bowing technique, with regard to performing and expression. In the quartets from Beethoven's early period, the performing marks often lack the accuracy and completeness that is required for an exact interplay, whereas they are given in the quartets of his later period almost everywhere with the greatest detail and precision, . Furthermore, the before mentioned scores contain a number of mistakes, which in all likelihood may have crept into the manuscripts as writing mistakes.I have therefore endeavored to carefully add the missing performing marks, as well as to correct the incorrect notes, without, however, claiming to have done everything that is questionable.Breitkopf Originals invite you to take a fresh look at 19th-century reception history. The music is printed clearly and in a larger than usual size.(Rebekah Smith, AUSTA Stringendo)The Breitkopf Originals series opens up a fascinating view into the Breitkopf & Hartel publishing-house archives. Andrea Gabrieli was a major force in moving the classical music world toward the more modern Venetian school of the Renaissance. Called by Alfred Einstein One of the greatest and most influential masters of the Renaissance period, Gabrieli fully developed the use of choirs of voices and instruments, often in opposition to each other. David has selected three examples from a posthumous 1589 collection, advising that the four-part pieces were originally scored for viols but are here arranged for modern instruments. And while the arrangement will accommodate a number of players per part, single players would be more historically correct. As important as Andrea was to the Venetian School, his fame would be eclipsed by his nephew and student, Giovanni Gabrieli.
