Max Warnecke's Konzertstuck is characteristic of the nineteenth-century solo Trombone tradition. At six minutes in duration, it is considerably shorter than contemporary solos of the time such as the Grafe Concerto. Like the David Concertino it uses similar martial-style opening and closing themes with a lyrical middle section. The solo and piano accompaniment are of medium difficulty and appropriate for school recitals or professional performances.

Gounod's Three Romances Without Words arranged by Ralph Sauer are taken from a group of five similarly named Romances Without Words originally composed for Piano solo between 1861 and 1866. Four of them were later arranged for Violin and Piano. The three movements are titled:1. The Periwinkle (La Pervenche)2. The Brook (Le Ruisseau)3. The Evening (Le Soir)The three movements (all in bass clef) are very lyrical, about 8 minutes in length, and are perfect for intermediate and higher level performers to begin to learn the finer points of phrasing. The highest note is G above middle C.

Bartok's Allegro Barbaro, composed in 1911 is one of his most famous solo piano works, written in his typical style using folk elements based on Hungarian Pentatonic and Romanian chromatic scales. The music has even been used on a composition by the Progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer from their 1970 debut album.
Ralph Sauer's brilliant arrangement for Trombone and Piano is reminiscent of the famous Trombone passage from the Miraculous Mandarin ballet suite.
This 3 minute work is suitable for advanced performers.
The sound clip is performed by Mr. Sauer with Mac Booke on piano.

Jef Van Hoof (1886 – 1959) composed his Divertimento for trombone and orchestra in 1935. It was dedicated to his friend, trombonist Jules De Haes, who for many years played in the Antwerp Brass Ensemble, originally founded by Van Hoof. This edition of the Divertimento for trombone and piano reduction was first published by Metropolis Music Publishers in 1952. The work is in two parts, the first of which Moderato molto explores the expressive side of the instrument, while the second part, a Scherzo, is bright, rhythmic, and allows for the soloist to show off a bit.

Arnold Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Opus 19, originally for Piano, were published in 1913 at a time when the composer was reacting to his feelings of the excesses of the Romantic Period. They were composed concurrently with his gigantic work Gurre-Lieder. The first five pieces were written in one day and the last one shortly after the death of Gustav Mahler as a rumored tombeau or memorial. Mr. Sauer has deftly arranged these six short pieces of around 5 minutes in length for advanced performers.

Gliere's beautiful character pieces, Six Album Leaves from Op. 51 are from a larger collection of twelve originally written for Cello and Piano in 1911 while the composer was living in Berlin. The composer most likely was inspired by Schumann's versions which were unknown in Russia. The pieces are full of eastern sounding melodies and exploit the singing nature of the Trombone. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly arranged six of these for advanced performers.
