One of the big projects of Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) has been to create a virtuoso solo piece for every central instrument of the symphony orchestra. When the Italian Risuonanza Festival asked for a solo trombone piece, the composer was glad, because the trombone solo was still lacking from the Solo series. Kalevi Aho tells: I like the trombone as an instrument, and I had before the Solo XIII composed already two big trombone works. In my Symphony No. 9 (1994) I have used the trombone as a solo instrument - in the premiere the Swedish trombonist Christian Lindberg played its demanding solo part - and 2010 I composed also a big trombone concerto for the Dutch trombonist Jorgen van Rijen. In Solo XIII (2017) I could utilize my knowledge about the possibilities of the instrument. The piece is in one movement, but it includes several slower and faster sections. It is a virtuoso piece, but the virtuosity comes from the psychological contents of the work and its form is dramaturgically quite clear. Rocco Rescigno played the premiere at the Risuonanze Festival in Pasian di Prato, on 31 May 2019. The duration of the piece is c. 9 minutes.

The infamous Six Cello Suites by J. S. Bach are perfectly adapted for the trombone by French professional trombonist, Andre Lafosse. Bach originally composed the Cello Suites, some of the most frequently performed and recognised solo compositions ever written for the instrument, during the period 1717-1723, when he served as Kapellmeister in Kothen. Lafosse's adaptions for trombone (1946) include phrase marks, dynamic markings, articulation, breath marks, and performance directions. Lafosse's adaptions are flawless, making the notorious Suites enjoyably accessible for the trombone.

The collection of 130 studies published in two volumes was compiled with the aim in mind to meet the demands of trombone instruction from the highest classes of the music schools to the Academy of Music. lt was selected from those 'traditional' studies which played a decisive role in trombone playing and instruction at the turn of the century and have become the most frequently performed studies since then. However old-fashioned these studies may seem, they belong to the best ones with regard to safe, smooth technique and the elaboration of a nice sound and will definitely serve their purÂpose in the future as well. On compiling the volumes, I have attempted to observe not only asequence according to grade of difficulty but the variety of characters as well. I am convinced that these studies are both useful and, when performed sufficiently colorfully, may contribute to overcoming the monotony of technical exercises. The articulation sings and markings of dynamics, which often differ from the original, try to meet this aim.I had already used this collection of studies before it was printed. 1 had to realize soon that the technical level of the first pieces was too high to assure a smooth transition from the trombone tutors written for beginners. As a result, I found it necessary to start the first volume with a shortened and facilitated version of some studies. Since these pieces in question have been changed considerably, a * beside the composer's name refers to the fact in each case that they are arrangements.I recommend my work to my past, present and future pupilsPál Makovecz.

Reviewed by Henri Couillaud and composed by Michel Bleger, Thirty-One Brilliant Studies is a set of studies for slide-trombone. Written for end of cycles (pre-exams) levels, such as 3 and 6, this piece is written in F key. These exercises are completed by other sets of studies and exercises by the same author for a complete technical formation. Michel Bleger initially wrote these studies for tuba or for trombone. Henri Couillaud (1878-1955) was a French trombonist and a soloist at the Paris Opera. His method was highlighting the importance of the air when playing.
