I remember well when I began to write these pieces: I sat down at the piano in the conservatory, which was almost completely empty at the time... and I improvised the first chords of the first piece. After that I wrote the theme. The music rang loudly in that large auditorium and I could hear how it echoed about the empty corridors of the conservatory... it reminded me of the overture from Charles Gounod's Faust, as my hands still played out the melodies, stretching the limits of the theme which would become, in a sense, the introduction to the whole cycle. Gliere's beautiful character pieces, Six Album Leaves from Op. 51 are from a larger collection of twelve originally written for Cello and Piano in 1911 while the composer was living in Berlin. The composer most likely was inspired by Schumann's versions which were unknown in Russia. The pieces are full of eastern sounding melodies and exploit the singing nature of the Trombone. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly arranged six of these for advanced performers.

Haydn composed over 100 compositions, each in three movements, for his wealthy employer Nicolas Esterhazy, who played the six-string instrument called a Baryton, which in shape looked much like our modern day cello, but, of course, with six rather the cello four strings.
