Jozef (Jef) Schampaert's 1952 Dramatische Fantaisie (Fantaisie Dramatique) for trombone and piano, dedicated to trombone professor Peter Roupcinsky, was written as a concours piece for the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp in Belgium. While the rest of the Belgian school was experimenting with a return to lush romanticism (Alpaerts, Maes, and the musical progeny of Benoit), or beginning to prod the tonal bounds of listenable 12-tone and serialism (Constant and Verbesselt), Schampaert took towards a different sound: that of the Impressionists, transmuted through his distinctly Flemish touch.

Sir Arnold Bax composed in a style that blended Romantic, Impressionist and Celtic flavors together in a brilliant way. Mr. Sauer has taken these two works originally for Piano and brilliantly transcribed them for Trombone & Piano. The Country Tune begins with a beautiful melody which turns into a jaunty dance. The Burlesque is also dance-like, but mixes 3/4 and 4/4 time in a most inovative way. These works are light, airy & very pleasant to perform and listen to.

Sibelius wrote the five-minute Romance in 1903 for string orchestra, originally titling it Andante. However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard later-on after he composed the 4th Symphony. Romance is made up of three sections; a slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Trombone and Piano. This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.

Alexander Scriabin's music has been described as mystical, lyrical and idiosyncratic. He was a most innovative and controversial early modern Russian composer. His works were ignored for many years until recently and are now seen as sincere expression(s) of genius.
The Three Etudes for Trombone and Piano are early works of Scriabin, originally written for solo Piano. They show lyricism, passion, moodiness, chromatic harmonies and great expression.
Mr. Sauer has once again brought three wonderful new works for advanced performers who wish to explore this area, largely unknown to the Trombone world. Those who do will be richly rewarded with the depth of musicanship found in these works.

Liszt composed the Romance oubliee around 1844 for Piano. It was forgotten until he heard Violist Hermann Ritter at the first performance of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at Bayreuth. He fashioned for Ritter a transcription of the work for Viola and Piano as well as ones for the Piano, Violin and Violoncello. In this short work, the listener hears the agonies of a troubled soul, beginning with a rhapsodic passage, continuing with a cadenza-like section, then a section with arpeggiated figures, finally settling into a peaceful ending. This 4 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. With Mr. Sauer's arrangement we now have this lovely version for Trombone and Piano.

I remember well when I began to write these pieces: I sat down at the piano in the conservatory, which was almost completely empty at the time... and I improvised the first chords of the first piece. After that I wrote the theme. The music rang loudly in that large auditorium and I could hear how it echoed about the empty corridors of the conservatory... it reminded me of the overture from Charles Gounod's Faust, as my hands still played out the melodies, stretching the limits of the theme which would become, in a sense, the introduction to the whole cycle. I could feel that the story was emerging: a story born from within the music. - Anton GLADKIKH ; Hoffmanniada is a collection of six short pieces for trombone and piano composed in a style inspired by the great Russian composers of the twentieth century. Brahms' 21 Hungarian Dances were completed in 1869 and sent to his publisher without opus numbers. Only three of the works are original compositions. The music mostly of one to five minutes in length was Brahm's biggest seller, originally for solo Piano, but once they were arranged for piano four hands, they exploded in popularity.James Miller has beautifully arranged five of them (1, 5, 7,8 and 9) for Trombone with Piano accompaniment and are appropriate very advanced performers. The sound clips are of Mr. Miller from his solo CD album, Coast to Coast, featured on CD Baby.

The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Trombone world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Concerto with Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile. Mr. Sauer brings a true Trombone feel to the 4 1/2 minute work for advanced performers.

Gliere's beautiful character pieces, Six Album Leaves from Op. 51 are from a larger collection of twelve originally written for Cello and Piano in 1911 while the composer was living in Berlin. The composer most likely was inspired by Schumann's versions which were unknown in Russia. The pieces are full of eastern sounding melodies and exploit the singing nature of the Trombone. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly arranged six of these for advanced performers.
