Arthur Pryor was one of the most popular bandsmen of his day. He was Trombone soloist for the famous John Philip Sousa band in the early part of the 20th century. Pryor later organized his own band that was renowned around the world. He was one of the first solo performers to use phonograph recordings to preserve his performances. To this day his recordings of his own works are considered to be some of the best Trombone performances ever recorded. Pryor's works for Trombone are melodic idiomatic and virtuosic. This collection preserves many of his best known compositions like Thoughts of Love and Blue Bells ofScotland but also makes available once again some of his other delightful works.

Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue for Trombone and Piano has never found its way into the mainstream of Trombone repertoire yet it remains a frequent favourite at virtuoso solo competitions. Chorale Cadenza and Fugue is ideal for trombonists seeking something more substantial and varied. Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) began his career as director of the Musical Illustrations Service on French Radio and Television but he left this position after 18 years to devote himself entirely to composition. As the title suggests Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue is divided in tothree contrasting sections which run seamlessly from one to another. The piece begins with the Trombone playing a lyrical chorale melody accompanied by rich Piano chords. The cadenza is dramatic with the intense Trombone line being played over tremolos from the Piano. This is followed by the angular and rhythmic Fugue initially stated in the low register of the Piano. As the Trombone states the Fugue a countermelody is introduced on the Piano. These themes continue and augment into a virtuosic fanfare motif closing in a grand and dramatic finish. Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue for Trombone and Piano is inspiring challenging motivating and essential to the repertoire of all advanced trombonists.

French composer Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) significantly contributed to the wind repertoire. Procession for Trombone and Piano was published in 1959 and remains prominent in the advanced trombonist's repertoire. Dubois' music is characteristically light-hearted with unusual harmonic and melodic textures. Procession for Trombone and Piano reflects Dubois' compositional characteristics as well as elements of grandeur reflecting the title. A typical performance lasts about four minutes and fifteen seconds. Procession is essential to the advanced trombonist'srepertoire. Dubois' work makes for an exciting and enjoyable performance for players and audiences alike.

French pianist arranger composer and conductor Jean Michel Defaye (b. 1932) entered the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of ten years old. His successful compositions and arrangements were mainly for brass  Mouvement composed in 1972 for Trombone and Piano being no exception.
