Mahler composed his 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1893 and 1894 in Steinbach on the Attersee near Salzburg. He spent most of his days those two summers composing in a tiny hut built to his specifications where he could compose in the meadow on the shore of the lake - undisturbed. Movement 5, What The Morning Bell Tells Me includes the voices of women's chorus, children and alto soloist and is a relatively short 4-minute bright rowdy episode, full of laughing voices, bells and angels. Ohad Wand arranged this great music for 12-part Trombone Choir while studying at the Eastman School and it was subsequently beautifully recorded by the Eastman Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. John Marcellus.

The mysterious Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor BWV 867 is special in that its fugue has five voices, has a leap of a minor 9th, and concludes with a hyperstretto (remember the theory class you slept through), the overlapping of ALL five voices offset by only one note. This seven minute work of genius beautifully arranged by Jim Tranquilla of the iTromboni ensemble is appropriate for advanced performers.

Crucifixus by Antonio Lotti is part of his Credo in F. This motet of 8 voices is a wonderful example of polyphony with many suspensions thrown in for good measure. The music is sweet with a beautiful sadness, making it a work that touches most listeners in a very personal way.Mr. Brink has transposed the work down a fifth into the key of F minor (resolving to F major at the conclusion), otherwise keeping the music true to its origins. This 4 minute work has a range of up to high B-flat for the 1st part. The top four parts are in tenor clef. The mp3 sound file is from a live performance of the Rundfunkchor conducted by Sir Simon Rattle from YouTube.
