Symphonie Fantastique was written in 1830 as one of the first program symphonies in musical history. The March of the Scaffold is the fourth of five movements, telling the story of a drugged-induced dream where an artist who has murdered his lover is condemned to death and marched to the scaffold where he witnesses his head being chopped off by a guillotine. This arrangement for 8-part Trombone Ensemble of about 7 minutes in length by Randall Malmstrom is an arrangement of the full movement and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Entrance of the Gladiators is a military march composed in 1897 and soon after was also subtitled Thunder and Blazes. It has become a legendary screamer march for circuses to introduce the clowns.The march is in three sections with some very lyrical moments followed by the chromatic break section featuring the low brass. The final trio section is also lyrical and chromatic at the same time. When played as a screamer the tempo is often taken to extremes.Wes Ballenger has done an amazing job of arranging this famous march for a virtuosic Trombone quintet.

The March from the Second Suite in F for Military Band (Op. 28, No. 2) by Gustav Holst is a staple of the concert band repertoire. The Chorale from the Finale of Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection) by Gustav Mahler is taken from the fifth movement, lasting over an hour. The Chorale is actually a quote from the Dies Irae, which Mahler called the march of the dead. Also added in is the Resurrection theme which is almost a fanfare. This excerpt from the Symphony features the low brass which makes this arrangement by Randall Malmstrom so meaningful.For advanced performers, this work will add another dimension to your concert.
