As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with fairy tales: with their archetypal characters and set phrases like'Once upon a time...'and'...they all lived happily ever after'. Fairy tales were however also a source of unrest for me as a seismograph of mankinds underlying primal fears and desires. So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann's Marchenerzahlungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work - despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal (Once upon a time...)to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals. Hailstork had originally written his Elegy in 1980, in memory of a friend's passing. Decades later, he was asked by cellist Tim Holly to finish the work, and the Caprice was added in 2016. Despite 35 years of intervening life and changes in musical language, Hailstork has matched the tonality of the earlier movement. His transcription for viola and piano was performed in October at New Music Norfolk (Hampton Roads) by Rebecca Sinclair Kim and Susan Ha.

The famous Golliwogg's Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Children's Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908.The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The present arrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for melodic instrument with accompaniment.

There comes a time in life when your parents have passed on. What we are left with is the memories of their love, guidance, support, and the happy times together. Last August when my mum sadly passed away, I wrote an Elegy as part of my grieving. However, as a family we had happy times together and it seemed only right to compose a work which would celebrate this. So, I added a first and last movement to create a short concertino. The movements are: Prelude: Peter John Connell: The Cheeky Chap Elegy: Mavis June Connell (Time To Remember) Rondo: Family Fun (Adrian Connell) Performance note The work can also be performed with accompaniment of string orchestra and harp using the set of parts for the version for clarinet and orchestra (E.D. 88833).

With his 'Concerto classico' composed in 1999, Bertold Hummel enables violin pupils with only limited technical skills to play an entire little violin concerto. The second movement, Elegy, is now also available as a separate edition for viola and piano. The melody of the Finnish folk song forming the thematic foundation of the movement is melancholy and gentle: a short simple theme which is introduced and then varied several times. To master this piece, it is sufficient for the violist to command the first position, and the piano part is easy to play as well. An ideal piece for pupils, competitions and for music-making at home.

New edition of this charming suite by the British composer Richard Walthew (1872-1951), originally published in 1900. The work was frequently performed by Lionel Tertis over his long career; his fingerings and bowings are of great interest to students and scholars, so these are included for reference in the viola cue stave in the piano score; the viola part itself is left 'clean' for performers to make their own decisions In 1943 Tertis premiered A Mosaic in Ten Pieces in the version for viola and orchestra in a concert broadcast by the BBC. The performance was reviewed in the Musical Times: “It is the work of a happy craftsman, genial, jesting (so few composers joke now). In a slow movement Walthew is at his serene best. Brahms would have enjoyed the Valsette, and Elgar beamed upon other parts. Tertis's phrasing is the best lesson I can imagine for any young musician...â€.
