Position 1 covers the four fingerings of the first position. The connection between these fingerings and the different keys - up to three sharps or flats - is also dealt with. The book features 38 exercises for the various fingerings, sevenscale and triad exercises, and 68 attractive performance pieces in a range of musical styles. The performance pieces can be played with CD accompaniment (demo and play-along tracks are featured on CDs 1 and 2) or with piano accompaniment. The pianoaccompaniments can be found on CD 2 in PDF form.

Das Buch umfasst 38 �bungen für die verschiedenen Griffarten, siebenTonleiter- und Dreiklangsübungen sowie 68 reizvolle Vortragsstücke in einer ganzen Palette an Musikstilen. Die Vortragsstücke können zu den Begleitungen auf den beiden CDs (die Demo- und Mitspielversionen enthalten), aber auch mit einem Pianistengespielt werden. Three Etudes for Viola was composed by American composer and arranger Nico Muhly. Written for Nadia Sirota. Three Etudes for Viola was designed as performance pieces as well as practice, the etudes help to deal with the messy fifth-based string crossings Muhly's harmonic language sometimes outlines. These three etudes can be performed in any order, all together, or singularly. The pre-recorded material for Three Etudes for Viola should be mixed in such a way that the viola rides in the middle of the texture. Etude 2, however, should favor the solo viola.

Geoffrey Burgon's Six Studies were originally composed for solo cello. This transcription, authorised by the composer, has involved some changes in register and notes due to the different timbres and response of the viola and the considerable difference in physical size of the two instruments. This work was commissioned by the Portsmouth Festival with funds provided by Southen Arts. The first performance was given by Julian Lloyd Webber at the Cathedral Church of Old Portsmouth in June 1980.
