In 1884 the Norwegian city of Bergen celebrated the 200th birthday of Ludvig Holberg, one of its most famous sons and a symbolic figure of the late Baroque era. For this occasion Grieg wrote the piano suite Aus Holbergs Zeit , which he orchestrated for string orchestra. To this day, the Suite - particularly in this arrangement - ranks among Grieg's most popular works. By using the romantic string sound, Grieg brings the late Baroque orchestral suite and its various dance forms to life again. Along with the string serenades of Dvorak and Tchaikovsky, Aus Holbergs Zeit is regarded as the third great late-romantic work for string orchestra. For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem; some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the Liber scriptus, was newly discovered.As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work.This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score as well as a detailed one on the Barenreiter website. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. The first version of the Liber scriptus for chorus is included in the appendix while the later version for mezzosoprano solo is to be found in the main part of the edition.

Published in 1927, 20 Studies for Viola is the most famous work by Maurice Vieux (1884-1951), a French violist. Composed for upper intermediate / advanced players, these twenty studies of two pages each will help to improve bow technique. Most of the studies are dedicated to famous violists who won the First Prize of the Paris Conservatoire: Jean Gay, Etienne Ginot, André Jouvensal, Jacques Desestre, Denise Thoret, Pierre Pasquier, Robert Boulay, François Broos, Louis Artières, Mrs Crunelle-Martinet, Louis Chaaton, Alice Goninet, Jean Lefebvre, Albert Bernard, Jean Cauhapé, René Cézard, Suzanne Robin, Marcel Quattrochi, Emile Amette and Alice Merckel. Marcel Vieux was also a professor at the Paris Conservatoire and a soloist at the Paris Opera. The Maurice Vieux International Viola Competition was established in 1983.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra violist Randolph Kelly had premiered Adler's Viola Concerto in 2000, but the orchestra's artistic management preferred that he not perform a contemporary work for his next solo appearance. With that guideline, Kelly contacted Adler, the master of orchestration, to arrange the Brahms Sonata in F minor, Opus 120 for viola and orchestra. In this new setting, The piece promises to bring the lush romantic strains of the famous sonata to a larger audience without upsetting the purists. The “small suite in the old style†was created in September 1992. It is not an outward stylization of early music, but rather an attempt to adopt a kind of Baroque-style thinking. But since we are 200 years older, our thinking is more reflective. That is, our C major sounds sadder today, more nostalgic, our 6/8 Presto more desperate than then, and we do not have the courage to finish the work tonally.
