Messiah 1741 - new light on Handel's masterpieceThe focus of this new edition is the Messiah as first conceived by the composer in 1741: before its first performance in Dublin in 1742, before the first London performances of the mid 1740s, before the final Foundling Hospital performances in the late 1750s. The editor succeeds in creating a 21st-century edition from the perspective of 1741, making clear that Messiah was a genius hit from the start.Messiah 1741 - the first and only complete edition of Handel's autograph scoreThorough information on Handel's performance practice in 1741 (including topics such as orchestration, continuo, text underlay and specific questions on interpretation)It offers a reconstruction of the wind parts according to contemporary sourcesPiano vocal score with contemporary vocal ornamentationFirst edition including the German text by Herder - a monument of the German enlightenment - which is contentwise and phonetically closer to Jennens' text than any other translation, therefore being a perfect singable alternativeThe appendix contains additionally the most popular and important aria versions composed after 1741 for practical reasons.Throughout this new edition, creative yet pragmatic scholarship shines through, and the Preface and Critical Report are thorough and unusually fascinating. ... I'm very happy to own the full score, and if I were starting out now, I'd invest in the whole kit and caboodle.(Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ)Critical Edition with the original English text by Charles Jennens as well as the German translation by Johann Gottfried Herder, including a comprehensive historical and musicological preface and detailed critical commentary.

First critical edition. The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus is one of George Frideric Handel's most popular choral works. It was performed over fifty times during the composer's lifetime and was one of his first works to be performed in Germany (1772). The frequent performances given by Handel himself resulted in a particularly large number of reworkings, reflecting local conditions. This new edition therefore offers the work in two performable versions: firstly, the version of the first performance in 1747, and the one from the last oratorio season during Handel's lifetime (1758/59). This makes available all the choruses and arias which Handel ever wrote for Judas Maccabaeus. Reflecting the latest Handel research, the edition is based for the first time throughout on Handel's conductor's score, thereby eradicating not only long-perpetuated mistakes, but also providing clarity about which pieces were actually performed by Handel. By contrast with the Chrysander edition obligatory until now, the aria Father of heav'n which introduces Part III is included here in its original, longer version. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5506300.

For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem; some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the Liber scriptus, was newly discovered. As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work. This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score as well as a detailed one on the Barenreiter website. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. The first version of the Liber scriptus for chorus is included in the appendix while the later version for mezzosoprano solo is to be found in the main part of the edition.

The Missa Sti Bernardi von Offida (1796) stands at the beginning of Joseph Haydn's late works. The Mass earned its nickname because in the Sanctus Haydn quoted the then well-known sacred hymn Heilig, heilig, heilig. The text of the music for this critical edition presents the work with the complete scoring for winds, including the clarinets and horns missing in the autograph score and the first edition. The optional horn parts are contained in the appendix and as part of the performance material. However, these parts cannot be dispensed with if we wish to fully re-create the Mass within the context of Eisenstadt. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4060800.
