Carl Loewe is known nowadays almost exclusively as a composer of ballads, but he was close to the spirit of his time and also composed a number of oratorios for the amateur choirs which became so numerous in the Biedermeier period. Das Suhnopfer des neuen Bundes reveals a wealth of expressivity using only a modest scoring. The solo parts can easily be performed by good amateurs, the well-known chorales give audiences the opportunity to join in the singing, and the scoring, mainly for small string group, underlines the emotions expressed by the soloists. In this oratorio we can hear Loewe's admiration for the Bach Passions, yet his characteristic musical language, typical of the time, shows that something new could develop from it. For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem; some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the Liber scriptus, was newly discovered. As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work. This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score as well as a detailed one on the Barenreiter website. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. The first version of the Liber scriptus for chorus is included in the appendix while the later version for mezzosoprano solo is to be found in the main part of the edition.

George Frideric Handel is considered England's first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5505600.

Practicing scales is essential to building and maintaining strength, technique, tone, and agility on the viola, but it is easy to slip into the habit of playing scales automatically, without paying attention to tonality or sound production. The 29 single-page studies in this book focus the attention of violists on the beauty of sound, with a particular concern for the way different keys resonate on the viola. The first 24 studies address all minor and relative major keys and proceed through the circle of fifths; the last 5 pieces are individually conceived, i.e., apart from the circle of fifths. No metronome indications are given, so the etudes can be played at individually comfortable tempos. The names of the etudes refer to various animals that have scales, including insects, fish, birds, reptiles, and a few species of mammals. The author hopes that in addition to experiencing more enjoyable scale practice, students will be inspired to learn more about these amazing creatures and write scale studies of their own.
