Sacred works occupy a large part of Charles Gounod's oeuvre. It was the Messe solennelle en l'honneur de Sainte Cecile that established his fame as a church composer. Its melodic invention and effective handling of the orchestra reveal a close proximity to opera. This Urtext edition is based not only on the original print of 1856 but also on copyists' manuscripts and autograph sources. Rounding off this well-researched Urtext edition are an informative Introduction and a detailed Critical Commentary. The edition is being published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Gounod's birth.

Due to the success of our Instrumental Fingering Posters, we thought it would be helpful to create a smaller version that could be tucked comfortably into any method book as a reference guide. Unbeknownst to us after days of research, we were left with countless questions, much confusion, and a slew of poorly crafted images from contradicting publications. That being said, we realized that there weren't truly any trustworthy resources in print and decided to address the void. We consulted experts in every category asking questions until both we and they and we were satisfied. Finally, a guide to fingering for beginners that even the experienced players will find beneficial. Santorella's Basic Fingering Charts are essential for anyone that picks up an instrument. Initially intended for beginners but after understanding the importance of false fingerings or more appropriately called, alternate fingerings their necessity is vital for playing certain musical passages on a particular instrument. In addition, after observing the difficulties that students had in identifying key signatures, we decided to include the Circle of Fifths diagram and every major scale in two octaves in every key including their enharmonic counterparts. After all was said in done, we now know, we now have the best educational products available for fingering in the industry. Our Basic Fingering Charts are perfect for private students, classroom study, or simply for a quick and easy reference guide while practicing at home. This Sonata for Viola (unaccompanied) was written in 1999. The soloists C-string is tuned down a semitone for the entire piece, giving a duskier quality to the tone-colour, and setting up in the very first bar the characteristic melodic/harmonic shape that infiltrates all four movements. I - slowish and thoughtful - gradually expands this opening idea into cantilena and pattern, as prelude to II - Vivacissimo - played muted throughout, a tremolando tarantella, with contrasting section, chunky double-stops, alternating withsomething of a gigue. III - adagio - rhapsodic and quasi-improvisando, enclosing a simple self-contained melody, and linking into IV, where the gigue-like material from the scherzo provides the principal substance, expanding into an ardent cantabile, and calminginto the Coda not just the finale but, in its reminiscences of I, to the sonata as a whole.

Though born in the Netherlands, composer Marinus de Jong (1891 - 1984) traded his Dutch citizenship for a Belgian one in 1926, and is considered one of Belgium's most prominent composers and pianists of the 20th century. He began his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Antwerp, Belgium, at the age of 15, studying under Lodewijk Mortelmans and Emile Bosquet. His Sonata for Viola Solo, Op. 106 (Sonate voor altviool solo), published by Metropolis Music Publishers in 1973, is a masterful work in four movements. It demonstrates not only his compositional style, sometimes playful and jazzy, other times plaintive and improvisatory, but also his familiarity with the viola, an instrument which he also played.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra violist Randolph Kelly had premiered Adler's Viola Concerto in 2000, but the orchestra's artistic management preferred that he not perform a contemporary work for his next solo appearance. With that guideline, Kelly contacted Adler, the master of orchestration, to arrange the Brahms Sonata in F minor, Opus 120 for viola and orchestra. In this new setting, The piece promises to bring the lush romantic strains of the famous sonata to a larger audience without upsetting the purists. The Six Three-Part Preludes and Fugues are regarded as a unique testimony to Mozart's profound interest in the works of Bach.
ISBN 9790004337998. 9 x 12 inches.
I am presently collecting the fugues of Bach - not only of sebastian, but also of Emanuel and friedeman, wrote Mozart to his father in April 1782. This could be a hint that the Six Three-Part Preludes and Fugues were derived from this collection: Mozart wrote string-trio arrangements of two preludes and five fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach, and of one fugue by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This apparently plunged him into such a creative mood that he simply wrote the missing preludes himself. It is to Johann Nepomuk David that we owe the first edition of this work, which introduced this unique document to a broad public for the first time. The present edition has retained David's basic editorial decision to adapt the divergent passages of Mozart's arrangement to Bach's original music text.Contents:No. 1 - Adagio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Fuga Mozart's arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach, Das Wohltemperirte Clavier I, Fuga 8 in D# minor BWV 853No. 2 - Adagio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Fuga Mozart's arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach, Das Wohltemperirte Clavier II, Fuga 14 in F# minor BWV 883No. 3 - Adagio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Fuga Mozart's arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach, Das Wohltemperirte Clavier II, Fuga 13 in F# major BWV 882.

First critical edition. The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus is one of George Frideric Handel's most popular choral works. It was performed over fifty times during the composer's lifetime and was one of his first works to be performed in Germany (1772). The frequent performances given by Handel himself resulted in a particularly large number of reworkings, reflecting local conditions. This new edition therefore offers the work in two performable versions: firstly, the version of the first performance in 1747, and the one from the last oratorio season during Handel's lifetime (1758/59). This makes available all the choruses and arias which Handel ever wrote for Judas Maccabaeus. Reflecting the latest Handel research, the edition is based for the first time throughout on Handel's conductor's score, thereby eradicating not only long-perpetuated mistakes, but also providing clarity about which pieces were actually performed by Handel. By contrast with the Chrysander edition obligatory until now, the aria Father of heav'n which introduces Part III is included here in its original, longer version. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5506300.

The “small suite in the old style†was created in September 1992. It is not an outward stylization of early music, but rather an attempt to adopt a kind of Baroque-style thinking. But since we are 200 years older, our thinking is more reflective. That is, our C major sounds sadder today, more nostalgic, our 6/8 Presto more desperate than then, and we do not have the courage to finish the work tonally. Something is not working, although the sounds are always the same. And the quote from Bach's “Chromatic Fantasy†looks like a gem; Nevertheless, can not we already hear something about our resignation in this famous motif? That is, we remember today Bach's prophecies, we make, so to speak, a double time travel ... –Vassily Lobanov.
