The Missa Sti Bernardi von Offida (1796) stands at the beginning of Joseph Haydn's late works. The Mass earned its nickname because in the Sanctus Haydn quoted the then well-known sacred hymn Heilig, heilig, heilig. The text of the music for this critical edition presents the work with the complete scoring for winds, including the clarinets and horns missing in the autograph score and the first edition. The optional horn parts are contained in the appendix and as part of the performance material. However, these parts cannot be dispensed with if we wish to fully re-create the Mass within the context of Eisenstadt. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4060800.

With the edition of the Christmas Oratorio within the framework of the Stuttgart Bach Editions, Carus presents a scholarly edition for practical performance. The basis for this publication are Bach's autograph score and the original parts. The conducting score contains an appendix with a concise Critical Report which provides information about the sources and their readings; when necessary, the latter are discussed in more detail, especially with regard to how the editor arrived at solutions for questions of articulation which differ from those found in previous editions. The representative, clothbound volume is supplemented by a study score as well as a choral score, a vocal score and complete orchestral material. In the orchestral material short excerpts containing the conclusions of the secco recitatives are rendered with cue notes in separate vocal systems printed above the score where the instrumentalists pause, thus enabling them make their entrances in the movements which follow these recitatives. This work is also available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.3124800.

Joseph Haydn's Stabat Mater, written in 1767, was the first church work the composer wrote after entering the service of Prince Esterhazy in Eisenstadt. Unlike almost all his other sacred works, it soon circulated in numerous copies and established Haydn's reputation as the leading vocal composer of his day. This edition is based on three original copies of parts, which are regarded as being particularly close to the (missing) autograph manuscript because of the date they were made and the reliable transmission of the music text. As so, this great, moving setting of the Stabat Mater is now newly available in a modern, scholarly edition. The complete performance material is available on sale. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5199100.

Carl Loewe is known nowadays almost exclusively as a composer of ballads, but he was close to the spirit of his time and also composed a number of oratorios for the amateur choirs which became so numerous in the Biedermeier period. Das Suhnopfer des neuen Bundes reveals a wealth of expressivity using only a modest scoring. The solo parts can easily be performed by good amateurs, the well-known chorales give audiences the opportunity to join in the singing, and the scoring, mainly for small string group, underlines the emotions expressed by the soloists. In this oratorio we can hear Loewe's admiration for the Bach Passions, yet his characteristic musical language, typical of the time, shows that something new could develop from it. Bach's B minor Mass is among the greatest and most ambitious works of all time. The various stages of composition of the Mass occupied the composer for over two decades: beginning with the Sanctus (1724), by way of the Missa of 1733, to the remaining movements of the Ordinary, which were composed during his last years. Thus the Mass, in its wealth of forms with arias, duets, as well as concertante and fugal choruses, displays the essence of Bach's skill and personal style. The greatest musical work of art of all times and all peoples (to quote the enthusiastic Hans Georg Nageli, who first edited the Mass in 1818) and one of the most demanding choral works in the repertoire is presented by Frieder Bernius, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart in a stellar recording based on the principles of historical performance practice (Carus 83.211). Awarded the Gramophone - Editor's Choice. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3123200.

He was without argument our greatest church composer, wrote the lexicographer E. L. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3710400.

First critical edition. The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus is one of George Frideric Handel's most popular choral works. It was performed over fifty times during the composer's lifetime and was one of his first works to be performed in Germany (1772). The frequent performances given by Handel himself resulted in a particularly large number of reworkings, reflecting local conditions. This new edition therefore offers the work in two performable versions: firstly, the version of the first performance in 1747, and the one from the last oratorio season during Handel's lifetime (1758/59). This makes available all the choruses and arias which Handel ever wrote for Judas Maccabaeus. Reflecting the latest Handel research, the edition is based for the first time throughout on Handel's conductor's score, thereby eradicating not only long-perpetuated mistakes, but also providing clarity about which pieces were actually performed by Handel. By contrast with the Chrysander edition obligatory until now, the aria Father of heav'n which introduces Part III is included here in its original, longer version. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5506300.

Since its first performance in Berlin in 1755, Carl Heinrich Graun's empfindsame (sensible) Passion Cantata Der Tod Jesu, with a libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler had long been one of the most frequently performed works in this genre. Until the end of the 19th century this work was able to maintain its position in the repertoire of numerous oratorio societies and singing academies (especially the Berliner Sing-Akademie). It was often given equal billing with Bach's passions, until finally, in the second half of the 19th century Bach's works became more predominant. With the publication of the present critical new edition (the first since it was first published in 1760), Der Tod Jesu is once again available for sale to the musical public. This makes accessible an epoch-making work which in its time set the standard for settings of the Passion. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1037900.

With the unfinished revision (1739) as an appendix. The St. John Passion ranks among the great vocal works from Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he made numerous changes. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources. The wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version is made possible for the first time with the present edition in this fourth and final version which was performed under Bach's direction in 1749. At the same time, with the aid of the appendix it is possible to perform the work in the traditional mixed version.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3124500.

George Frideric Handel is considered England's first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5505600.

Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the last generation of composers of the 18th century who, in addition to the popular Passion oratorios, continued to write oratorio Passions using biblical texts. From his pen a Passion for each of the four Gospels has survived. With sensitive arias, unusal orchestral sound and expressive turba choruses Homilius translated the traditional Passion to his times. It was surely not a coincidence that in Hamburg Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachr resorted primarily to the Passions of Homilius, especially the St. Mark Passion, which he first performed in an abridged version in 1770 and whose music he employed in 14 of his 21 pasticcio Passions. Joseph Leopold Eybler had frequent contacts with the great composers of his day: both Joseph Haydn and Albrechtsberger were his teachers and friends, and he had a close friendship with Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn. His major Christmas oratorio Die Hirten bei der Krippe zu Bethlehem (1794) was composed four years before Haydn's Die Schopfung (The Creation). The almost operatic work displays a wealth of different facets: from the virtuoso aria, through the tranquil depiction of nature in music, to the portrayal of the most heartfelt emotions. As a true jewel of Viennese classicism, Die Hirten (The Shepherds) is a worthwhile addition to the Christmas repertoire. Score and part available separately - see item CA.9700700.

The cantata cycle Die Tageszeiten, which was composed in Hamburg in 1757, is one of the outstanding late works of Georg Philipp Telemann. A Symphonie and four cantatas (each of which consists of an aria, accompagnato, aria, and chorus) portray, in a richly sensitive manner, the course of a day, beginning with the awakening of nature to the sunset. The poetry of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariae and Telemann's music herald the beauty of nature, as well as the greatness of God revealed within it. Colorful instrumentation and pictures in sound corresponding to each time of the day, delicate compositional structure, and an ingenious realization of the text characterize this work, whose musical idiom is at times reminiscent of Haydn. The oratorio Passions by Homilius were among the last compositions of their kind in the 18th century. In an oratorio Passion the chorus is restricted mainly to singing the chorales and the interjections of the crowd; only the conclusion of a Passion provides an opportunity for an extensive choral movement. In the St. John Passion the final chorus emphasizes the supreme importance of the Crucifixion as the climax of St. John's Gospel. The free elements of the composition take the forms customary at the time: da capo arias are predominant. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3710300.

The Requiem in B flat major is Johann Michael Haydn's second setting of the liturgical text of the Mass of the dead (another Requiem, MH 599, has since been identified as the work of Father Georg Pasterwiz) and it is also his last work, his Opus ultimum. On commission from Empress Maria Theresia he began the composition in 1805, but due to a serious illness he made only slow progress with the work. Like W. A. Mozart, he could not complete this Requiem. In 1839 Father Gunther Kronecker, Benedictine Father in the monastery of Kremsmunster in Upper Austria, completed the torso in the spirit and style of Haydn. During his student days in Vienna Father Gunther belonged to the circle of friends who were associated with Franz Schubert. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5483800.

In spring 2020, coronavirus began spreading throughout the world and in many places people were subjected to quarantine. It was then that Hiyoli Togawa, a violist, proposed that the BIS record label release a viola disc entitled Songs of Solitude of short compositions by different contemporary composers, as a sort of reflection of the present time and offering comfort to listeners in their solitude. Hiyoli asked Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) to compose a piece in which she could play and sing simultaneously. The meditative, melancholy Am Horizont is dedicated to Hiyoli Togawa and composed in April 2020. Duration: c. 5'30''.
