Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed Valse Romantique (F minor; CD 79/L.71) in 1890 for solo piano, during a period when he was short piano works in traditional genres, seeking his own style. Unlike the impressionism for which he later became known, this waltz is written in a late romantic style. Not particularly difficult, it is ideal for teaching or for a recital. This transcription for violin or flute and piano was created in 1924 by Alexandre Roelens. Reprint edition.

Rasmussen organised five songs by Robert Schumann into a large cycle, within which each song is rotating forwards and backwards in several tempo-layers at the same time. The circle consists of two independent but complimentary orbits - one for each singer. Written in 1986, it was commissioned by, and dedicated to, the Washington New Music Ensemble. The full instrumentation consists of Soprano and Baritone voices with Flute, Violin, Clarinet, Vibraphone and an amplified Piano.

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. One role of music is to evoke. Therefore, Nighttime is a nocturne, a night piece suggestive of flickering shadows, perhaps created by firelight. It is a recurrent setting in human existence. The music opens with the scene of twilight calm, gently disturbed with the slight uncertainty about what is around us, what we cannot see. Later, the clarinet takes on a solo role, and the notes bleed like careless paint into the other instruments that quietly sustain them. Next, the flute takes over the role of solo. The piece ends with a repeated cadence of morning light. (From the performance notes.).

Odd Moments was written for the Da Capo Chamber Players in 1999 in celebration of George Perleas 85th birthday. The piece was revised in 2009, resulting in a version that is a few minutes shorter. The title of the piece obliquely refers to Perleas late piece Critical Moments, and also to an aspect of Perleas system of 12-tone tonality, which distinguishes between odd and even harmonies. The piece is in six short sections, each with its own tempo. A slight pause should be taken before each section. A A A The score is in C. Accidentals apply only within the measure, and cautionary accidentals have been added, as needed. In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. As the title suggests, the music is in a state of perpetual questioning using a variety of approaches. For example, Enigma opens using ostinati (plural of ostinato) that do not match in length, like a staircase with each step a different height. Additionally, the music has sudden starts and stops, again unexplained. There are dramatic and powerful explosive passages that are interrupted. The technique, used to create this feeling of a perplexed music world where things seem often not to make sense and to be left unresolved, is called in poetry and literature, anticlimax. In Enigma, the music suggests one direction; then refuses to continue, striking out in another direction. Artists use approaches such as this to force themselves into creative circumstances that they otherwise might not have discovered. (From the performance notes.).

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. There are passages in Nostalgia that build using two layers, a louder foreground and a quieter background. Both of these layers are independent of specific instruments, in other words, the various instruments jump in to play a role in either layer, then jump to the other layer. It is as if the ensemble has doubled. The technical musical term for multiple instruments interweaving to produce a single thread or idea is called Klangfarbenmelodie (tone-color-melody). Because there are two layers (louder and softer), both using this technique, Nostalgia is a unique example of 'double Klangfarbenmelodie.' The piece ends with a series of intense rhythmic pulsations and several apocalyptic fanfares. (From the performance notes.).

The three movements examine the same materials from different points of view; in the first, the ideas are chronologically separated, but they alternate and develop through the instruments in an intensifying way that generates a rather imposing and grandiose rhetoric. The second, with its hypnoti, incessant reiterations at maximum volume of a simultaneous combination of motives of different l lengths and shapes, ends just short of becoming unbearable... In the last movement the flute, clarinet and violin slowly unfold a continuous texture that combines several of the earlier elements, while the piano softly interjects the echo of its first movement triplets.

Gasa is a Korean word meaning simply Song-Words and is the name of a Korean narrative art song. It is sung by a woman and is accompanied by a bamboo flute, the Taegum and an hourglass drum, the Changgo. In Gasa the violin part is modeled on the character of the voice which contrasts such opposites as purity and courseness, near and far, light and dark. ''Gasa exists in space. It takes no heed of time- each moment exists in space and that space is unending. Within this (space) however, there exists a dramatic development.AE (Isang Yun) In Gasa Yun combines his central-tone technique with twelve note tone-fields.

Composer and conductor Eugene Bozza (1905-1991) was a pupil of Henri Busser and Henri Rabaud at the Conservatoire de Paris, and received the first Prix de Rome in 1934. It was during his stay the Villa Medici that he wrote his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano ? an adaptation of the third movement of Johan Sebastian Bach?s Organ Pastorale in F Major BWV 590, which was to tour the world. This nostalgia-imbued melody, which expands over a regular meter, has, in turn, been the subject of numerous transcriptions, first for clarinet, then for Violin (or Flute) and Piano. Editions Leduc have chosen to republish this last version, with the added bonus of an audio version that should be of valuable assistance to all musicians!.
