Among Vienna’s many composers and pianists of the time, Anton Eberl (1765–1807) was the one considered most worthy of comparison with Beethoven. His Sonata in B flat major, Op.35, his last of seven sonatas with violin, was composed around 1805 and dedicated to Maria Walburga, the Princess Bretzenheim. This was one Eberl’s last works, as he died prematurely, at the age of forty-one, in 1807. Unlike many of Eberl’s lesser contemporaries, in its duration, formal and harmonic novelty, and in the lively relationship between the violin and keyboard, his Op.35 shares much of the musical ambition and quality of Beethoven’s works in this genre.

Whereas Nono considered the world to be only fragmentarily analyzable, so-called consumer capitalism increasingly intrudes upon ego structures, by fragmenting them to the point of: assumed insufficiency, i.e., was consumption a form of infiltration?, or: in television you can see models licking face cream because it's so rich etc. (retranslated), as Meredith Haaf cited in her book review (SZ / 23.05.2016 Alexandra Kleeman: You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine) , and to the point of similar perfection-senselessness. Music doesn't do things by halves. Even when events or notes are puffed up, they can retain elegance and significance. Other ego amplitudes are of violinistic nature or are favourite memories - Paganini's Capricci, Stockhausen's Studie I, Steve Reich, the tone C and similar things. The craziest egos are quantums, because at no time are they identical with themselves. They can entangle and superpose, are nonlocal, etc. Although the sound character in this Duo is fairly open, I believe I succeeded in making probability waves of harmonic stopovers perceptible. This means hearing without analyzing and without constantly measuring. Nonlocality - without messenger particles - means no harmonic steps, but with the capacity to interact. (Nicolaus A. Huber, May 2016)World premiere: Toronto, November 17, 2016 Written for the Duo Wapiti (Genevieve Liboiron, Daniel Anez).

The Concertino op. 12 by the German violinist, composer and violin educator Ferdinand Küchler (1867-1937) is a three-movement work that is ideal for the development of playing in first and third position. The first movement is both powerful and playful in character, and its themes that follow on from each other rapidly, producing a concise sonata form. The second movement has been written in a three-part song form (A-B-A). The A section has a cantabile atmosphere, whereas section B is more dramatic. The third movement is a rondo (with a refrain and episodes). The refrain is joyful in spirit, and the episodes present variation. Tomasso Antonio Vitali was born in 1663 in Bologna and died in 1745 in Modena. His father, Giovanni Battista Vitali was one of the most famous musicians of his time. The young Vitali must have received most of his musical education from him. The present edition of Vitali's four sonatas is a selection from the composer's twelve sonatas surviving in manuscript. The four selected sonatas do not put too high technical demands on the violin so that even students with only some years violin training can safely perform them. Territorial restrictions may apply. Edmund Severn (1862–1942) was an American composer and violinist. Born in England, he studied in various cities including Berlin and composed works for unaccompanied violin, orchestra and string quartet. “Polish Dance†is his best-known work. Written in the style of a mazurka, it is an invitation to this dance form with its distinctive local colour. Many ritardandos and rubatos add rhythmic spice; wide leaps, double stops and three-note chords ensure delightful melodic and harmonic turns. Expressive dynamics provide the necessary vim to this “Polish Danceâ€!

- Stefan Heucke.

The day that Australian and New Zealand forces joined the Allies for an invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula of Turkey in World War I, with disastrous consequences, is celebrated in Australia as Anzac Day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). To honor this special day, Bresnick takes inspiration from two selected poems by Bertolt Brecht (And I Always Thought and Legend of the Unknown Soldier Beneath the Triumphal Arch). Commissioned to commemorate Australia’s Anzac Day, similar to Memorial Day, and inspired by two Brecht poems…The somber opening violin and clarinet lines unfolded to haunting effect before eventually reaching a fervent climax. --Vivien Schweitzer, The New York Times.

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. There are passages in Nostalgia that build using two layers, a louder foreground and a quieter background. Both of these layers are independent of specific instruments, in other words, the various instruments jump in to play a role in either layer, then jump to the other layer. It is as if the ensemble has doubled. The technical musical term for multiple instruments interweaving to produce a single thread or idea is called Klangfarbenmelodie (tone-color-melody). Because there are two layers (louder and softer), both using this technique, Nostalgia is a unique example of 'double Klangfarbenmelodie.' The piece ends with a series of intense rhythmic pulsations and several apocalyptic fanfares. (From the performance notes.).
