Frigyes Sándor (1905-1979), violinist, teacher and conductor. His six-volume Violin tutor was published between 1949 and 1959, and has remained popular ever since. One reason for its popularity - in addition to its methodological concept may be the fact that from the very beginning learners are given high quality musical material on which to master the basic elements of violin playing. The musical material in the volumes was written specifically for this tutor by Pál Járdányi and Endre Szervánszky apart from pieces designed for pedagogical purposes it includes a wealth of folk tunes (Hungarian and other European folk melodies) graded to suit each level of difficulty, andexcerpts representing different periods in the history of music.

Trance means an altered state of mind in which a person becomes capable of communicating with spirits by the means of a ritual. Echo like sounds have a significant role in the piece, they were achieved by aleatoric as well as metric materials. Our prehistoric ancestors experienced echo as a side effect of rituals they performed, basically they heard the echo of their own voices but they believed these sounds came from their ancestors. As 2013 was the 90th anniversary of Gyorgy Ligeti's birth, my piece pays respect to his musical heritage. In this regard the piece references Ligeti's artistic aesthetics and in some cases uses direct musical quotations.(Mate Bella, 2013)The work won first prize at the 2013 New Hungarian Music Forum In memoriam Gyorgy Ligeti composer's competition in chamber music category. It was premiered by Katalin Kokas and the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gergely Vajda on 25 September 2013 in Budapest.

Jakob Dont's 24 Preliminary Studies are an important stepping stone towards acquiring the fundamentals of violin technique. Developing violinists typically work on Dont's Opus 37 before starting Kreutzer's 42 Etudes or Caprices. By working through these preliminary studies, budding musicians can develop a solid foundation for their playing technique so that they can comfortably take on intermediate-level etudes.

The piece was composed at the request of violinist Eszter Perenyi, my colleague at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, and was several times amond the optional pieces of the yearly violin competition for students. It was inspired by the famous 63rd poem of Catullus that tells the story of Attis: the hero of the Greek mythology arrives at the Mount Ida in Frygia, to the invitation of the goddess Cybele, and becomes her lover. The Gallas, certitude priests of Cybele chase him into delirious dance, by the end of which he castrates himself. On waking from his paralysed dream he entreats in vain for his virility and freedom to Cybele, he will remain servant of the goddess for eternity. My work tells the story in four parts: 1) Attis' ecstasy 2) Dance of the Gallas 3) Attis' dream 4) Attis' entreaty. The Catullian galliambic metric that first appears in the 'prologue' of the piece, becomes the organisational principle of almost all musical aspects of it. (Hungaroton HCD 32484).

Three compositions which belong together were written by Tihanyi in 1991-1992: Winterszenen, Nachtszene (night Scene) and Irrlichtspiel (Will o? the wisp). The Irrlichtspiel composition for violin solo and 19 instruments ensemble, came out of the notes for the song entitled Irrlicht in the fifth scene of Winterszenen (...this composition exactly follows the musical process of Winterreise by Schubert...). Here, the starting point was the refrain-like, pregnant rhythm motive, attached to the piano introduction of the Schubert song. At the end of the first part called Prelude, a miniature exposition prepares for the five developments. Their titles are: Adagio, Capriccio, Monolog, Pantomime and Postludio. World premi?re: Budapest, 30 April, 1996. Ildiko Line ? violin, Budapest Sinfonietta, conducted by Gergely Vajda.

This is a revised edition of the scale studies published in 1948. It contains the major and minor scales used during violin teaching at elementary level as well as broken triads and seventh chords. Its mission is to gradually prepare the player for the volume ''Das Skalensystem by Carl Flesch, used in advanced level teaching. It depends on the needs of the student whether to make use of the fingering suggested in the music or a different one: the same musical patterns can be realized in many different ways. Similarly, bowing, rhythmic patterns, and dynamic levels may be altered according to taste. As far as progressions in thirds, sixths, octaves, and tenths are concerned, due to lack of space only samples are given here. Based on these, transposed versions may be elaborated individually.

David Stone is a contemporary British composer and violinist, best known known for his works for student musicians and ensembles such as his String Quartets. He was a master at Charterhouse at one time, a producer at the BBC and Music Director of the Godalming Operatic Society, then Director of the School of Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He began to compose works for young musicians when he found a dearth of suitable teaching material for his own students.

Andras Szollosy (1921-2007) was one of the most significant Hungarian composers of the second half of the 20th century, yet his oeuvre has not become as well-known as that of Gyorgy Ligeti, two years his junior, or of Gyorgy Kurtag, five years his junior. Szollosy did not compose many works and he was strict about which of them he would allow to go public. As a younger colleague of his once remarked: He only composed his good works. Szollosy's Sonata for Solo Violin, which was written at the age of 26 and was publicly performed only in 2006, almost 60 years after its composition, fell victim to his self-criticism. Although the model of Bartok's Sonata for Solo Violin of just three years earlier was obviously on the young composer's mind, he was no epigone of the great master. From the aspect of both composition and instrumental technique, the 11-minute Sonata for Solo Violin represents exacting and prominent music, and is a remarkable piece among works written for the violin in 20th-century Hungarian music. The score of the posthumously published work was edited by the soloist of its world premiere, Michael Barta.
