Legends of the phoenix are found in stories from ancient Egypt and Greece. While each culture possesses a range of stories encompassing the myth, these tales tend toward similar traits: a sacred bird with brilliantly colored plumage and melodious call lives for typically 500 years, then dies in a nest of embers, only to be reborn among the flames. Phoenix Rising consists of two movements: I. Dying in Embers represents an old phoenix settling on top of a pile of embers and breathing its last breath; II. Reborn in Flames depicts the newly-born phoenix getting its first taste of flight.Legends of the phoenix are found in stories from ancient Egypt and Greece. While each culture possesses a range of stories encompassing the phoenix myth, these tales tend to share similar traits: a sacred bird with brilliantly colored plumage and melodious call lives for typically five hundred years; then the bird dies in a nest of embers, only to be reborn among the flames. In Egyptian stories, the phoenix gathers scented wood and spices for its funeral/rebirth pyre, then collects the ashes from its earlier incarnation and flies them to the temple of the sun in Heliopolis to offer as a tribute to the sun god.In Greek myths, the phoenix was approximately the size of an eagle and was adorned with red and gold feathers; it would fly from either India or Arabia to Heliopolis to give its offering. The bird’s association with immortality and resurrection are particularly intriguing aspects of these tales, giving numerous writers (including William Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling) a rich resource for their own stories.Phoenix Rising consists of two movements. I. Dying in embers represents an old phoenixwho is settling on top of a pile of embers and breathing its last breath. II. Reborn in flames depicts the newly-born phoenix getting its first taste of flight.Phoenix Rising was commissioned by saxophonist Christopher Creviston, who has recorded the work on the Blue Griffin label. The composer has also made editions of the work for flute and for clarinet (also available from Theodore Presser Company).

The most standard instrumentation for voicing is violin, viola, and cello. However, three of the same instruments work well as do other groupings, given that the higher-pitched instrument plays the higher part. This three-part format follows a standard order: part 1 is melody, part 2 is harmony, and part 3 is a traditional bass line. Optional 8va markings are sometimes given to help the voicings sound better. The selections have been arranged in alphabetic order. The melodies, both sacred and secular, cover many centuries and originate in Western Europe and the United States. Each work is in the public domain and was selected for both its quality and musical interest.Arranged specifically for a chamber setting, the trios may be performed in a variety of venues from church services to holiday gatherings. Some repeats are marked in the music, but any selection may be repeated for the appropriate amount of music needed. Learning to play chamber music is an important milestone in the music student’s journey. Playing with a teacher or friend helps develop rhythmic independence, intonation, listening skills, and sense of pulse that are vital to playing in an ensemble. These progressive duets offer beginning and developing players the opportunity to play along with others, or with the helpful support of the teacher in a lesson. Each duet adds new techniques and challenges that align with the natural advancement of lessons, moving from easy rhythms and keys to staccato bow strokes, slurs, accidentals (low or extended finger patterns), and more complex or independent rhythms. While the melody remains in the top line, musicians can alternate playing the melody as all efforts have been made to keep both parts at a similar difficulty level. This book features familiar melodies for the holidays, including sacred and secular Christmas songs, music for Hanukkah, and folk tunes from many countries. Appropriate for caroling, recitals, or chamber holiday concerts, there are 30 festive selections of different tempi, styles, and keys for variety, while remaining in string-friendly ranges. Each duet is one page or less in length, ensuring an immediate sense of success for young players. Put new skills into practice while celebrating the season.

In a true performance piece, Igudesman starts us off, appropriately, with Jingle Bells, but a Jingle Bells heard through his ears. This polite opening quickly morphs into an Igudesman-style Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, followed by other surprises of sacred and secular bent. His opening note, Kind of Christmassy with a touch of Hannukah, is apt, as his (recommended) sung We Wish You a Merry Christmas leads directly into I Have a Little Dreidel. Timid violinists are advised to stick with the generic Silent Night (which, surprisingly, also makes an appearance here, along with Auld Lang Syne). True performers of advanced skills will want to work this oddity into their holiday program this year. Christmas Confusion is challenging for both players, but will delight audiences with surprising quotes from familiar materials.

Of the 19 Masses by Dittersdorf which have been handed down, the present Mass, which is being published for the first time, enjoyed a special popularity during the composer's lifetime and it was even performed for the coronation of emperor Franz II in the Frankfurt Cathedral. This solemn, prestigious Mass shows evidence of choral movements in traditional contrapuntal church style as well solo parts with a modern, cantabile character. In addition, the Gloria includes a lengthy virtuosic violin solo, which also lends the work a concertante character (Dittersdorf was a professional violinist).
