Waldschrats Nachtlied is a concert piece that is practically guaranteed to make a major impact. In the dark of night, a hobgoblin and his companion are whisking about the forest. The tempo is brisk, and the permanent change of meter ensures productive turbulence. Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the premiere; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Leonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known.As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Leonard.The letter informs us that the composer invited Leonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Leonard.The recently discovered proofs reveal how Leonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Leonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Leonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. These two movements were originally intended for Kleine Suite for violin and piano (ED 7564), but were exchanged for the 'official' second movement published in the suite. Over the course of the reviewing of Zimmermann's early work, many surprising things have come to light again. These two alternative movements are not difficult to play, can be used for many different purposes and expand the repertoire by two unknown pieces by Zimmermann.

With Berlin Music, Brett Dean wrote a threefold homage: to the classical duo consisting of violin and piano; to the violin virtuoso Midori, for whom the piece was written; and to the city of Berlin, where he lived between the mid-1980s and 2000 and whose rich cultural life he owes much to his development as a musician and composer. The first four, relatively short movements of the five-movement work form a suite of character pieces, which is followed by a longer final movement. In summary, this turns out to be the actual main movement from which all motifs and harmonies emerged in a compositional manner. This includes tuning down the G side by a whole tone - an apparently small difference, but one that has a major effect on the timbre and resonance of the instrumentand suddenly makes previously impossible interval sequences playable. In addition, the violin in the third movement (a moto perpetuo in which Dean bows to Ravel's violin sonata) has to play with a practice damper, while the pianist changes the instrument and plays on a standing piano that is dampened by a pedal and placed next to the concert grand Expressing nervous energy in tight college spaces.

Austrian-born American violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) is considered among the best virtuosic violinists in history. While he did write some operettas, vocal works, and a smattering of pieces for other instruments, it is unsurprising that most of his output was for the violin. In the earlier part of his career, he wrote a number of pastiches in the style of other well-known composers, going so far as to ascribe the work to them rather than to himself. In 1935, Kreisler revealed that he had composed these select works, answering his critics by pointing out that they had deemed to music worthy under the other composers' names, and that the name changes, the value remains. Among these such works is his Concerto in C, IFK 42, which Kreisler falsely attributed to Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi. In three movements, the work exists with both string orchestra accompaniment and this Master reprint edition for violin and piano.

Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012) numbers among the most prominent pianists of the 20th Century. That he was also a composer is less well known, though he wrote a whole series of works, notably for his own instrument, the piano (Piano Works, Schott ED 22923). His Romance for violin and piano may be considered something of a rarity. Musical child prodigy Alexis wrote this little Romantic piece in March 1943 in Jerusalem, where he and his mother had fled from Sofia following their internment as descendants of Jews. The Romance is a melancholy 'Song Without Words', simple and poignant in effect. This first edition is based on the original manuscript. Editorial changes have been marked in brackets.

Cyril Scott (1879 - 1970) composed Deux Preludes in 1912. Includes: I. Poeme erotique and II. Danse. In the first of two Preludes, Poeme Erotique, the continually changing time signatures are the defining factor, displacing the bar accents between a rocking three and a rhapsodic five-quaver meter. The Danse that follows relies even more on the rhythmic acuity of its interpreters through an unfolding sucession of unusual meter changes. These two pieces will appeal to an advanced player wishing to enrich his repertoire with superb effective performance pieces. Schott's exemplary printing on buff-colored paper with slightly-larger-than-usual notation should serve to bring the unjustly neglected Scott back into the violin-repertoire fold.--Strings magazine.

“I belong to that group of people who appropriate Debussy's wonderfully formulated philosophy according to which music begins where words end. Contrary to a view that has become widespread during the past 100 years, I am convinced that the task of the composer is to write music, not to talk about it. Even if my technical and aesthetic commentaries on one of my compositions were to have a certain value for listeners, such a commentary would have the effect that I were more or less forcing my own vision of the work onto the listener. The power of music is, however, a gift that makes it capable of calling forth different reactions in listeners. I shall therefore limit myself to saying that the 'Imaginary Variations' were inspired by the wonderful recordings of Janet Packer that I listened to with the greatest pleasure prior to the beginning of my work. The title is derived from the fact that this composition is structured similarly to the classical variation form and that the audience can listen to the constant changes of the musical ideas. In truth, however, the twelve short sections of the work are not true variations even though they reveal some connections and similarities.†(Krzysztof Meyer).
