The Violin Sonata No. 1 in E minor, op. 73, a Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano, occupies an important position in Joachim Raff's oeuvre: it reflects numerous artistic, aesthetic, biographical, and reception-historical aspects characteristic of Raff. The work was composed in Weimar in 1854, when Raff was going through a process of artistic self-discovery. He increasingly distanced himself from his mentor Franz Liszt and intensively explored Wagner as well as the ideal of absolute music - this is also reflected in the music of the sonata. While Raff described the first two movements as objectified, he perceived the last two movements as a piece of him, that is, not free of extra-musical influences.The 1st movement, with its expansive main theme, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn; the 2nd movement reveals the refinement of classical-romantic work with musical material. The 3rd movement, with its partly rhythmic, virtuoso accompanying figures and harmonically advanced passages, allows a deeply romantic, almost tormented insight into a soul life a la Sturm und Drang. With his Six Morceaux , Raff created a collection of six short pieces with the aim of pleasantly entertaining many a listener and demonstrating that he was also capable of writing something easy. After all, he had made a name for himself in the years before with extremely demanding chamber music for renowned dedicatees. The Six Morceaux , dedicated to the violinist Ludwig Straus, on the other hand, are probably related to Raff's teaching activities at a private piano school in Wiesbaden at that time. Therefore, with the individual pieces varying in difficulty they are well suited for violin lessons without losing any of their musical ambition. The most famous piece is probably the Cavatina. Arranged for various scorings during Raff's lifetime, it continues to be one of the most popular Encore pieces altogether - Fritz Kreisler, Yehudi Menuhin and Itzhak Perlman have made recordings of the piece. They say that a piano quintet version was even heard on the Titanic . This modern Urtext edition is based on the first printing, supervised and initiated by Raff himself. Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. Just like Bach's 6 suites for cello solo, these 6 arabesques are composed of a number of distinct movements which follow the suite principle. The melodies in these 6 arabesques are influenced by Mediterranean folk music.

Ferenc Vecsey (1893-1935) was one of the greatest virtuoso violinists of the early twentieth century. He was soon noticed as a child prodigy, and after his early violin lessons from his father, he became a pupil of Hubay. His first known public appearance was at the age of 6 in Tátraszéplak (Tatranská Polianka), and a few years later in Berlin he made his debut abroad. There he heard the elderly maestro József Joachim, who was astonished at the talented boy's playing. So started the young Vecsey's performing career: he gave a dozen or so concerts in Germany, then followed a series of concert tours all over the world (in 1906 in Spain, Bartók was his accompanist). From1907, his permanent place of residence between concerts was Berlin, where he began to study harmony and counterpoint. Soon he began composing himself, mainly writing virtuoso pieces for his own concerts, of which the Valse triste became the most famous. Other musicians were also happy to include this short character piece in their programmes.Vecsey later settled in Italy. He died unexpectedly at the young age of 42.

The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Op.103 was written in 1958 and is yet another superb orchestral work by Edmund Rubbra. Typically, this is a work that calls more on musicality than on virtuosity, although Rubbra knew the violin well for having long partnered his wife and for having long played in a trio with William Pleeth. Rubbra's familiarity with the instrument certainly helped him avoiding technical 'tricks' and concentrating his creative energies more on an inward-looking solo part than an outward-dashing virtuosic one!
