Tomasso Antonio Vitali was born in 1663 in Bologna and died in 1745 in Modena. His father, Giovanni Battista Vitali was one of the most famous musicians of his time. The young Vitali must have received most of his musical education from him. The present edition of Vitali's four sonatas is a selection from the composer's twelve sonatas surviving in manuscript. The four selected sonatas do not put too high technical demands on the violin so that even students with only some years violin training can safely perform them. Territorial restrictions may apply. Karol Szymanowski (1882-1932) is regarded as one of the most important Polish composers since Chopin. He received his formative musical training in Warsaw where he lived for many years and was also director of the Conservatoire and Music Academy. His compositional oeuvre comprises a large variety of styles: Szymanowski first leaned towards Chopin and Scriabin, then studied Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky, finally finding a style in which he combined impressionism and expressionism. His 'Mythes' for violin and piano from 1915 fell in a transitional period, turning away from late German Romanticism. 'Romance for violin and piano is a short, reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist, Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing, numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece, the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.' - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981, Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. She graduated from the BMus course with First Class Honours and completed her Masters with Distinction in 2004. From 2005-07, Helenwas a Legal & General Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music. I wrote the first movement of my Sommersonate in the summer of 2010, and though a self-contained work, it called out for continuation or a companion piece. I imagine the first movement, marked moderato, to be bright, free, weightless, transparent, flooded in sunlight. On 11 August 2011 it is fifty years since the death of the composer Johanna Senfter from Oppenheim who actually was a trained violinist for she had studied with renowned violinists at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt. No wonder that she dealt with the solo violin repertoire her whole life long. Concert works with orchestral accompaniment as well as chamber music works were the results of her compositional endeavours, and she attended to both the large and the small form. Apart from sonatas deeply rooted in the Romantic tradition, Johanna Senfter also wrote '5 Stucke' Op. 100 for violin with piano accompaniment. They are five miniatures which combine to form a kind of sonatina, while nevertheless being quite equal to its big sister, the sonata, as regards playing and compositional technique. A musically demanding, yet rewarding work by the Reger pupil.
