Violin ABC is the perfect volume for pupils to familiarize themselves with the instrument, basic musical elements, and the sensation of moving naturally while playing. Its editors comprise renowned Hungarian experts in the field of violin pedagogy, and their aim was to create a publication that allows children to have a joyous first encounter with the violin. Violin ABC helps students learn to have calm, relaxed posture and movements through playful illustrations. That way, those who want to play the violin can get a worthwhile introduction to the basics of the violin repertoire through various folk songs and beautiful music examples. The legendary violinist, Yehudi Menuhin (1916 - 1999), had this to say about the publication: ''I am delighted to see a work on the teaching of the violin stress the importance of the preparation of our body and limbs, of our minds and our soul, independently of the instrument itself. I have always said that, ideally, I would like the preparation to be so complete and thorough and enjoyable, that when a child first picks up a violin and a bow, it will draw a clean sound.')' - Yehudi Menuhin (1916 - 1999).

For a long time after Romanticism had come to the fore, it was generally agreed that Brahms somehow did not get it: History and Progress - it was thought - were proceeding along one clear path and Brahms - who was composing sonatas and symphonies instead of nocturnes and symphonic poems - had taken the wrong way. Almost one century later, Schonberg wrote an essay, Brahms, der Fortschrittliche (Brahms, the progressive), in which he explained that it wasn't like that at all.Fully assuming the risk to appear somehow irreverent, I have to confess: Over the years, I came to the conclusion that the present - and the future - can be created only by loving the past. As Brahms had shown us, it is only by accepting the challenge of taking our heritage into our own hands, that we can create something new. We cannot avoid engaging with the past. Therefore, starting with my Sinfonia n. 1, I began to flirt with such a strong and effective musical structure like the sonata form. I re-read and freely transformed it, because it is a sturdy and resilient structure, but also a theatrical and colorful one. For me, it is a happy structure. And I think that today more than ever we need something like this: We need to find places - even imaginary ones - where we can give happiness a form of its own.Nicola Campogrande, December 2020World premiere: Bologna/Italy, Streaming, April 11, 2021Commissioned by the Fondazione Musica Insieme.

When the Newport Music Festival commissioned me for a piano trio in honor of their 2021 season, I looked for a topic that would celebrate an aspect of the Newport community. While researching the area, I was struck by the nine lighthouses situated around the island. The dual nature of lighthouses was particularly appealing to me: not only do they serve a vital role in the navigation of ships around rocks and land, but they are also a beautiful sight, particularly at night when their blinking beacons are clearly visible to the eye. It occurred to me that lighthouses link the past with the present, and will endure long into the future, with their beacons serving the same purpose for every generation.I became fascinated with the lighthouse on the property of Castle Hill Inn, located at the opening of the East Passage of the Narragansett Bay. This squat thirty-four foot granite structure was erected in 1890 on a very picturesque spot, right at the water’s edge. Its “characteristic,†the nautical term for each lighthouse’s unique light sequence that allows ships to identify the lighthouse, is to alternate on for three seconds, then off for three seconds. The lighthouse has also served as the starting and finish line for numerous high profile yacht races, as well as survived a massive hurricane in 1938, though the lighthouse keeper’s nearby residence wasn’t so lucky. American novelist Thornton Wilder wrote much of his 1973 novel Theophilus North while staying at the Castle Hill Inn; a passage from the book perfectly captures the dual nature of lighthouses:“At a later visit I was able to engage the pentagonal room in a turret above the house; from that magical room I could see at night the beacons of six lighthouses and hear the booming and chiming of as many sea buoys.â€In Beacon of the Bay, we first hear the lighthouse’s characteristic as its ruby light blinks on and off. This is followed by a simple theme that represents the lighthouse performing its solitary duty. As the piece progresses, we hear waves playfully lapping around its base, then yachts gracefully floating by; this is followed by a violent storm that churns the waves with so much force that they crash against the lighthouse’s granite body. But the steadfast lighthouse holds firm to the rocks, grandly blinking its ruby light. The music quiets back down to its simple theme, with yachts sailing by once more as the piece concludes.

Inspired by Béla Bartók's violin sonatas, Ravel planned his own sonata for violin and piano in 1922, but at first did not get beyond sketches. Many interruptions ensued and the work was only finished in 1927. He dedicated it to his violinist friend Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Regarding the sonata's sparse, thinned out compositional structure and instrumentation, Ravel later emphasized that the sonata proved the tonal incompatibility of the violin and piano. Yet it still succeeded in winning a permanent place in violin repertoire â not least because of its middle movement inspired by jazz elements and the blues. The fingerings in this Henle Urtext edition have been provided by two masters of their instruments: Christian Tetzlaff and Pascal Rogé.

A suite whose movements always deliver something other than what they seem to promise. But throughout, the two instruments and respectively their players act like two people in very specific situations:I.: The opening movement is reserved for the piano; the initially earnest, solitary cantilena intensifies creating expectation. SuddenlyII.: the violin sounds. Its moving figures replace the now silent piano, also soloistically.III. „Passacaglia“: The title is taken literally – the two instruments/persons encounter each other in the street. Two musical characters who meet at a specific point, recognize each other, but move on again, each one by itself. IV. „Rondo“: The two of them dance together. Before me, I saw people dancing the Sardana – a round dance – in front of the cathedral of Barcelona. Four themes in different time signatures circle ceaselessly between the two instruments. V. „Fuga“: At last, regardless, panic flight – again the title is taken literally ... Human, only too human …

Whereas Nono considered the world to be only fragmentarily analyzable, so-called consumer capitalism increasingly intrudes upon ego structures, by fragmenting them to the point of: assumed insufficiency, i.e., was consumption a form of infiltration?, or: in television you can see models licking face cream because it's so rich etc. (retranslated), as Meredith Haaf cited in her book review (SZ / 23.05.2016 Alexandra Kleeman: You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine) , and to the point of similar perfection-senselessness. Music doesn't do things by halves. Even when events or notes are puffed up, they can retain elegance and significance. Other ego amplitudes are of violinistic nature or are favourite memories - Paganini's Capricci, Stockhausen's Studie I, Steve Reich, the tone C and similar things. The craziest egos are quantums, because at no time are they identical with themselves. They can entangle and superpose, are nonlocal, etc. Although the sound character in this Duo is fairly open, I believe I succeeded in making probability waves of harmonic stopovers perceptible. This means hearing without analyzing and without constantly measuring. Nonlocality - without messenger particles - means no harmonic steps, but with the capacity to interact. (Nicolaus A. “Memory of a dear place†is the title given to this collection of three enchanting pieces for violin and piano. The “place†in question was the country estate of Brailov that belonged to Tchaikovsky's patron and friend Nadezhda von Meck. He stayed there in idyllic seclusion in May 1878 and completed this work. These pieces were composed very close in time to his Violin Concerto, and they too demonstrate Tchaikovsky's matchless gifts as a Romantic master of melody. For this edition, the Russian Tchaikovsky specialist Alexander Komarov offers the highest degree of editorial precision, having drawn on all the relevant sources from both Russian and international archives. In the course of his work he has also been able to disprove beyond a doubt the view held up to now that the title Souvenir d'un lieu cher was only added after Tchaikovsky's death.

Life - Still Life, Op. 165 (violin and piano) - David BraidI am keen on concise musical forms such as Prelude and Fugue, where there is one clear straightforward idea, followed by another that is more involved and developed. In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.A note on performance: Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. The work has had the privilege of being recently recorded by violinist Ezgi Sarıkcıoğlu and pianist Rossitza Stoycheva, and is available on all major platforms:https://open.spotify.com/album/6p5YIe17ci0UMuo2RqZgjRhttps://music.apple.com/gb/album/transfigured-life-still-life-world-premiere-recording/1738035953.

The Kreutzer Sonata was originally dedicated not to Rudolphe Kreutzer (who never performed it) but to George Bridgetower, a famed 18th-century Afro-European concert violinist. In an early draft, Beethoven jokingly labeled the piece in starkly racialized terms: Sonata Mulattica composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, big wild mulatto composer.Beethoven and Bridgetower performed the premiere, which was by all accounts a success, and even featuring some improvised embellishment by the violinist. While celebrating afterwards, the two quarreled about what Beethoven construed as Bridgetower's insult of a female acquaintance; the composer then revoked the original dedication, adding Kreutzer's name instead. The work gained acclaim, while Bridgetower's career languished; he eventually died in poverty.Bridgetower has been the subject of considerable research and speculation, most notably in poet Rita Dove's book, Sonata Mulattica. From our 21st-century vantage, considering Bridgetower's unique circumstance, we can only see him as an ambiguous figure who, in embodying difference, provoked inspiration, fantasy, desire, anger and, finally, erasure. My piece is a collection of imaginings about George Bridgetower. It is not programmatic, but it takes on an episodic character, assembled from contrasting fragments. The dance rhythms, recurring figures and gestural contours are intended to feature the embodied expertise and expressivity of the performers, who at times must access liminal sounds and execute complex synchronies. I am grateful to Jenny Koh and Shai Wosner for involving me in their beautiful, virtuosic music-making.

“Virtuoso piece in the style of a Hungarian Rhapsody†– thus reads Ravel's entry on “Tzigane†in the so-called “Autobiographical Sketch.†Composed in 1924, there are three versions of this work: with piano, with orchestra and with luthéal, a device for keyboard instruments to extend the timbre. “Tzigane†was inspired by the Hungarian-English violinist Jelly d'Aranyl, to whom Ravel had already promised a virtuoso piece in 1922 following Franz Liszt's “Hungarian Rhapsodies.†Work progressed slowly and d'Aranyl only received the music four days before the première – but she still gave a brilliant performance.

Aurea Luce was written at the request of Madeleine Mitchell and Geoff Poole by way ofcelebrating my 50th birthday at a concert in my home town of Shaftesbury, Dorset. The work is based on a plainsong melody sung as a hymn for the Feast of St. Peter s Chair in Rome, reflecting the dedication of the church in which the premiere took place. I started writing the work on International Women s Day 2015 and it was serendipitous that thehymn s text is ascribed very unusually to a 5th century female author, Elpis (reputedly the first wife of the philosopher Boethius). The title translates as ..with golden light.. and in context within the verse it reads as: Aurea luce et decore roseo, lux lucis, omne perfudisti seculum, decoran caelos inclito martyrio hac sacra die, quae dat reis veniam (The Poissy Antiphonal, fol. 412v) (The beauteous light of Eternity hath ooded with blissful res this golden day which crowns the Prince of the Apostles, and gives unto the guilty a free way to heaven). Duration: c. 9 minutes.
