Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time and as he reaches his 75th birthday in 2009 he remains prolific.The sonata for violin and piano was written for the virtuoso violinist, Ilya Gringolts and first performed at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney in 2008. The work is principally concerned with Italian architecture and the music takes both performers and audience across an imaginary walkway over Rome as proposed by the architect Giuseppe Rebecchini. Starting at the 17th Century Chiesa Nuova the exceptional journey passes Renaissance churches, exhibition spaces, the river Tiber, glass facades, sculptures and even a prison where a Lazio folk tune can be heard echoing from behind the walls. The journey ends 15 minutes later at Gianicolo, an area where one can take in breathtaking views over the whole city.

The material introduced by the piano of the beginning a solo is the one that serves of vertebral axis of the work, that has nearly the form of a rondo. This introduction is based on isolated, naked notes, with a constant rythm of the eighths that create a big intervalic space between them. Later on, that will be used as a support to an espressive melody of the violin, that will take this material and will expose it in pizzicato. In this way will be used as accompaniment to a very suggestive and lyric fragment of the piano that covers nearly all the registers of the instrument. This will lead to a second section of the work, of a very rythmic and intense character of both instruments. The third section, the most expressive of the work, it's iniciated with some chords of the piano that little by litlle dissapear and remembers the introduction. Here, the violin develops a melody of big lirism, supported by the piano witht he material of the introduction, but this time there are non isolated notes but full chords that disintegrate again at the end, taking up again the idea of a fragment of the first section of the piece by means of the piano. Far from free instrumental effects, the work looks mainly for a direct communication with the listener.

Mikko Heiniö's Alla madre (2007) abandons the traditional virtuoso concerto concept: here a large orchestra engages in dialogue with a solo violin. The first movement is called Arrivo, “Arrival: the soloist literally arrives later, and by degrees, playing his/her first two solos offstage. Even then the orchestra continues to take the initiative for a long time. Not until the second movement, entitled Aura, “Air or Wind, does the initiative pass to the solo violin as it sets light to notes in the orchestra harmony like individual lamps. And not until the end of the second movement and the beginning of the third does the solo violin play completely on its own. The title of the first movement, “Arrival, underlines the event, the dramaturgy, whereas that of the second movement, “Aura, alludes to the texture and the shimmering space. The third movement is the most strongly emotional, as the name Carezza, “Caress suggests.
