There is not a great deal known about the violinist, teacher and composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827-1914) from Erfurt. However, two of his compositions virtually immortalized him: the fantasia The Infant Paganini as well as the somewhat more difficult sister work The Boy Paganini (Schott ED 21703). Both are played with great enthusiasm by young violinists all over the world. Both compositions present a sparkling display of beautiful melodies and brilliant idiomatic figurations which are effective without being too difficult.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the premiere; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Leonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known.As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Leonard.The letter informs us that the composer invited Leonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Leonard.The recently discovered proofs reveal how Leonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Leonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Leonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000) wrote his two sonatinas in 1930-31 for two outstanding violinists of his generation: György Hannover, who died young, and Ede Zathureczky, who was to have a bright career. The composer, who was studying in Rome at the master class of Ottorino Respighi at that time, fills the easy-to-understand works with neoclassical themes, sometimes showing the characteristics of Hungarian folk music. At the same time, he provides performers with the opportunity to display their expressiveness and virtuosity.

Ferenc Vecsey (1893-1935) was one of the greatest virtuoso violinists of the early twentieth century. He was soon noticed as a child prodigy, and after his early violin lessons from his father, he became a pupil of Hubay. His first known public appearance was at the age of 6 in Tátraszéplak (Tatranská Polianka), and a few years later in Berlin he made his debut abroad. There he heard the elderly maestro József Joachim, who was astonished at the talented boy's playing. So started the young Vecsey's performing career: he gave a dozen or so concerts in Germany, then followed a series of concert tours all over the world (in 1906 in Spain, Bartók was his accompanist). From1907, his permanent place of residence between concerts was Berlin, where he began to study harmony and counterpoint. Soon he began composing himself, mainly writing virtuoso pieces for his own concerts, of which the Valse triste became the most famous. Other musicians were also happy to include this short character piece in their programmes.Vecsey later settled in Italy. He died unexpectedly at the young age of 42.

As an educational and recital piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina Op. 35, composed in 1969, has accompanied many a young musician following his or her own path. Having sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and hasbeen included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. The three movements are characterized by warmth and exciting rhythms: in the powerful Maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme; the recapitulation ends with an impulsive Fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody over spherical harmonies of the piano. As a highlight, playful ease, marching rhythms and dramatic intensifications alternate in quick succession in the Finale vivace, followed by wild arpeggios that conclude the piece. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and violoncello were already commonly used. To mark its 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey & Hawkes present the work in a revised, newly set edition. Written in the 1990s by the composer himself and now available forthe first time, the versions for alto and tenor saxophone are valuable additions to the repertoire for beginning instrumentalists.

He is most famous for coining the term 'Lord Haw-Haw' in his work as radio critic of the Daily Express under the pseudonym Jonah Barrington, in reference to the Nazi propaganda broadcasts of William Joyce during the Second World War.Dalmaine was also a record presenter in the pre-1955 days and responsible for the 'discovery' of the then deceased Italian tenor, Alessandro Valente, giving Valente enjoyed a considerable posthumous vogue. As a composer Dalmaine wrote chamber music, and transcribed the cantatas of J.S. Bach to piano as well as a wide range of piano and string works published by Forsyth.
