The Ukrainian Suite for wind quintet dates from 1983 and is in three movements. In the opening Allegretto, there is a hint of minimalist techniques, where the unusual harmonic shifts will challenge the players to forget conventional cadences. Several parts share parallel rhythms in many places, while one part carries the melodic material. Similar principles can be seen at work in the Moderato con moto second movement, where persistent repeated notes accompany the melody. The third movement, also Moderato at the start, builds towards a final section where all five parts share very similar note patterns, and excitement is generated by the contrasting dynamics and the relentless drive of the rhythms. This quintet was originally published by Phylloscopus Publications in 2001 and set from the manuscript by C.M.M. Nex and F.H. Nex.Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in B flat and A, Horn in F and Bassoon. Score and 5 Parts included.Former Spartan Press Cat. No.: PP391.

Bothnian Rhapsody was commissioned by the Finnish Pohjanmaa (Bothnian) Military Band for their 50th anniversary in 2003. Being myself of ethnic Ostrobothnian descent, I was so thrilled that the Rhapsody was finished a year in advance. Listeners may recognise some of the Finnish folk- song allusions such as The Fighting Song. The International Trumpet Guild published the brass quintet version as a supplement to the March 2007 ITG Journal. In the summer of 2007 The U.S. wind quintet Calico Winds asked me via email l if there was a wind quintet version. There is one by tomorrow, I replied.

Kimmo Hakola's Wind Quintet op. 96 (2017) was commissioned by the Kimito Island Music Festival. The composer sees that making the ensemble ultimately breathe and express itself as an organic, coherent subject should be the aim in composing for wind quintet. The normal chamber-music configuration is not a sufficient basis for me in composing a wind quintet: the instruments have to be compressed, reduced, even crushed together so that, in pairs and different combinations, they produce new, viable audio units. Collision often generates something new. Kimmo Hakola has gone through a number of styles and influences in his career as a composer, his idiom expanding at times to embrace Romanticism, Orientalism and klezmer. He has attained international recognition with an output that spans various genres from intimate solo works to full-length operas such as La Fenice (2011) commissioned by the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Many of his works are expansive and epic: his Piano Concerto (1996), for instance, clocks in at 55 minutes. Hakola says that he sees music as drama. His dramas explore almost Shakespearean extremes, from moments of raging sound and fury and violent battles to quiet moments of meditation and heart-rending monologues.
