Woodwind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) Duration: 6' Composed: 2012 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC 3 movements I. Seven Toes Down II. En Pointe III. Muddy Boots This charming suite has three short movements, each with its own character. The suite bursts open with breathless energy. Seven Toes Down is modal, in 7/8 time, with people dancing in bare feet on bare ground, so vigorously that it kicks up the dust. En Pointe opens with a lovely waltz, then it focuses in on the tiny, delicate movements of a ballerina high up on her toes. Muddy Boots is big strong guys, covered with dirt from a hard day of work, practicing one-upmanship. Different players have the chance to show what they can do, surrounded by their friends. Then we catch another glimpse of the ballerina before closing playfully with Seven Toes Down. Difficulty Level: 4 (Advanced) See composer website for audio sample.

Bothnian Rhapsody was commissioned by the Finnish Pohjanmaa (Bothnian) Military Band for their 50th anniversary in 2003. Being myself of ethnic Ostrobothnian descent, I was so thrilled that the Rhapsody was finished a year in advance. Listeners may recognise some of the Finnish folk- song allusions such as The Fighting Song. The International Trumpet Guild published the brass quintet version as a supplement to the March 2007 ITG Journal. In the summer of 2007 The U.S. wind quintet Calico Winds asked me via email l if there was a wind quintet version. There is one by tomorrow, I replied.

Incursion is a three movement interconnected work. Each movement is written in a contrasting style but common elements and figures exist within each linking them together. Movement I involves Baroque style imitative counterpoint, while movement II employs minimalistic repetition. The final movement bridges key melodic, rhythmic, harmonic and figurative elements while introducing new thematic material. The use of the contrabassoon in the second and third movements extends the overall range of the ensemble and adds a distinct edge to the dissonant sonorities of the final two movements.
