Supported by a major commissioning award from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress, my Chinese Folk Dance Suite is written for violin solo and orchestra, and premiered by The Women's Philharmonic with violin soloist Terrie Baune, conducted by Apo Hsu, on March 10, 2001, at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Inspired by various Chinese traditional folk dances, I've composed three movements in the suite: 1) Lion Dance. Traditionally, people dance with richly decorated hand made lions, accompanied by percussion ensemble, to celebrate happy occasions and major festivals throughout the country. In the composition, I use Chinese drum and other percussion instruments in the background, to form a dynamic and rhythmic texture responding to the solo part, which imitates the tunes played on the suona (traditional Chinese trumpet). The pitch materials came from traditional Guangdong Music tune and Chaozhou Music tune ; 2) YangKo. Originated in northern China, it's a major folk dance form in mass performance popularized in the country. In YangKo performance, people always play rhythmic patterns on the drums hung around their waists while singing and dancing. In my second movement, I have imagined a warm scene of YangKo dancing in distance. The solo violin plays a sweet and gracious melodic line while all members in the orchestra sing the non-pitch syllables in different layers as the soft background, to imitate the percussion sound which produces the ever going pulse. 3) Muqam. It is a large scale traditional music and dance form from Uygur nationality in Xinjiang province, originated in the 15th century. In my third movement, I keep the meter of seven eight and the melodic style of Muqam music. The fiery dancing gesture cumulates the sustained climax section at the end of the work, after a colorful violin cadenza in both improvisational singing style and polyphonic writing with woven lines. Scored for 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 bassoons, 4 French horns in F, 2 trumpets in Bb, 3 trombones, percussion 1 (3 congas, low tom-tom, temple block, paddle castanets), percussion 2 (snare drum, 6 small Beijing opera gong, 12 big Beijing opera gong, crotales, tambourine), percussion 3 (suspended cymbal, a pair of 6 Chinese cymbals, bass drum), solo violin, violins I, violins II, violas, cellos and double basses. Duration is about 16 minutes. The work is recorded on Bis [CD-1352] and released in 2003, performed by Cho-Liang Lin and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, cond. by Lan Shui. Reduction for B-flat soprano saxophone and piano by Wong Tak Chiu (2017) and edited by Chen Yi (2018) The second movement YangKo is premiered by Dr. Wong and Korak Lerpibulchai at the Singapore Saxophone Symposium on 8/13/2017. The American premiere of the saxophone and piano reduction version of Chinese Folk Dance Suite is given by Chi Him Chik and Hao Yin at the Society for American Music National Conference in Kansas City, MO on 3/2/2018.

Traditional form meets modern melody: Raaf Hekkema's 'Suite' is based on the classical form of Bach's French dance suite with Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Saraband, Minuet, and Gigue. Hekkema gives each movement its own modern character: The Prelude is based on a free melody, like the tradition librement opening of a French suite for lute from the 17th century. In the Allemande, an improvisatory melody develops over an ostinato bass whereas the Courante is a fast, softly swinging movement. The Saraband with multiphonic chords resembles a thoughtful etude, and the Minuet plays with the complexity of three long musical eras. The final dance, the Gigue, turns out to be really 'funky'.

Selected from the Gayaneh Ballet, these three colorful examples of Aram Khachaturian's writing for ballet are based on rhythms and melodic motives from different ethnic groups, ranging from the very Slavic Ukranian Gopak (Hopak) to the Armenian Dance of the Maidens and the Kurdish Mountaineers' Dance. They vary in instrumental color and tension from festive and party-like, through sultry and romantic, to tense and almost angry. These may be performed in any combination - a single stand-alone dance movement, a contrasting pair, or all three in a complete set. A culturally rich and unique experience for players and audience alike. Dur: 7:45 (Grade 5).

The depth and inventiveness of Amanda Harberg’s SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET can only be described as remarkable. Harberg combines the rich tradition of renaissance and baroque dance suites with her own American voice, stirring up dramatic, exciting sounds and stories. Cantus uses the imitative entries of renaissance motets as a jumping off point into a more contemporary world. The playfully virtuosic Furlana refers to the Italian folk dance rhythm in 6, punctuated by lots of unexpected 5’s. Fantasia hints at being a lullaby with an animated and jazz-influenced middle section, and the closing Cabaletta is true to its 19th-century meaning of a rousing closing section following beautiful lyricism. SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET was commissioned and premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet.Amanda Harberg’s Suite for Wind Quintet was commissioned by the Dorian Wind Quintet in 2017. The piece was the result of a conversation in a bar between Harberg, Dorian’s flutist Gretchen Pusch and Pusch’s husband Richard Bayles, on the occasion of Dorian’s clarinetist Ben Fingland’s 40th birthday party. A year and a half later, the Dorian Wind Quintet gave the world premiere of Harberg’s quintet at Bargemusic, and has incorporated it into their repertoire ever since. Suite for Wind Quintet is in four movements- 1. Cantus, 2. Furlana, 3. Fantasia and 4. Cabaletta. The melodic material heard in the very opening of the piece can be heard recurring and transforming throughout the four movements, until it unites triumphantly in the final coda with the theme of the concluding movement. The piece was inspired by the concept of placing Renaissance and Baroque-inspired dance suites into Harberg’s idiom as a 21st century composer.

This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies are more abstract and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colorful and direct, with its own distinct mood. The outer movements---Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda----share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic coloring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age! Arranged for wind band.

This facsimile of an original by Jean-Joseph Mouret is part of our French classical music collection. Edition : Paris, l'Auteur, Boivin, Leclerc, 1737. Preface: Early music department of the C. N. S. M. D. de Paris (class of Irene Ginger and Jean Saint-Arroman): links between danse and music - choreographic proposals for certain dances - Mouret's ornamentation - Proposed ornamentation for the repeats of a saraband. Three separate instrumental parts: premier dessus, second dessus, continuo (instrumentation ad libitum , violins, flutes or oboes). These works are written as trio and may be performed by two dessus (violins, flutes or oboes) and basso continuo. They may also be played with a chamber orchestra formation. As the dance suites of theatrical works are artificial, 18 th century suites, written specially for dance, are rare. Collection supervised by the musicologist Jean Saint-Arroman, professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse of Paris and at the CEFEDEM Ile de France (Training Centre for Music Teachers). He is the author of the majority of our prefaces and has also been involved in library searches. Facsimile of a copy in the National Library of Paris (France). 1. Sidestep Reel - In 19th Century America, the Afro-Celtic fiddle style was the centerpiece of many a dance. Reels and hornpipes were very popular forms. Their repetitive, even-metered rhythms were easy and fun to dance to, and their infectious singable melodies stayed in the mind and on the tongue. More adventurous fiddlers were given to syncopating on these forms by accenting off beats and by embellishing melodies with oddmetered note groupings. Syncopation is a fundamental rhythmic attitude of jazz and this movement is a celebration of that art. The melodic language is a home-grown concoction of commonality between traditional reels and hornpipes and the Baroque, Ragtime and the quartal concepts of Modern Jazz. 2. As the Wind Goes - the wistful late night song of a lullabye, a campfire song, a ballad...a spiritual. It is sung as if on the wind, yearning to experience once again that which will only ever again live as memory. 3. Jones’ Jig - the Irish Jig, the African 6/8 bell pattern, the shuffle rhythm of jazz and the drum style of Elvin Jones all play around with the relationship of 3 in the time-space of 2. The juxtaposition, negotiation and reconciliation of these opposing rhythmic perspectives create interesting musical relationships all over the globe. 4. Nicola’s Strathspey - In the traditional Strathspey, improvised embellishments, syncopated dotted rhythms and the use of space between notes create expectation, momentum and surprise. These same elements and their effect on the listener are the same in the blues. It seems like a natural marriage. 5. Bye Bye Breakdown - This is good ol’, Saturday night barn dance, hoedown fiddling. It revels in the whining cry of open double stops, in all types of musical onomatopoeia from train sounds to animal calls to country whistling, and in the steady 2/4 rhythm that is as basic as walking. The harmonic framework of several popular fiddle and folk tunes provide a practical grid for the cutting of challenging melodic and rhythmic figures. It is designed to tire fiddler and dancers out. Then we stomp our way home in varying states of delight and disrepair.Solo Violin Duration: 24' Composed: 2018 Published by: Wynton Marsalis (administered by Skayne's Music).
