Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere. Arranger Tohru Takahashi has made the sound even more colourful by using several mallet percussion instruments.

He utilized original melodies and traditional melodies from liturgical chants of the Russian Orthodox Church. His brilliance as an orchestrator was showcased in this large work for full orchestra and included multiple time and key signatures in addition to various solos and cadenzas.This arrangement stays true to the original key signatures and includes all main melodic and harmonic voices and structure in a continuous performance that is accessible and challenging. Care should be shown to the changes in meter, tempo and key signatures along with techniques such as divisi and tremolo. Subdivision and counting can be reinforced throughout this piece. Fr. Jim Chepponis was commissioned to write a festive setting of Psalm 19 for the dedication of Christ Cathedral in Orange County, CA, in 2019. The result is what we've come to expect from this veteran composer. The optional instrumentation for flute, oboe, brass quintet, percussion, organ, and strings is perfect for a festive liturgy but can also be pared down for other occasions. The alternate refrains and different sets of verses make it work at multiple liturgies at which Psalm 19 is appointed. Both assembly and choral writing is very singable. The icing on the cake is that it can be done in English, Spanish, or a combination of the two.
