It is odd therefore that the majority of critics condemned the libretto and music after the first performance. Luckily, history has changed that verdict and recognized a masterpiece. This delightful arrangement of Mozart's popular aria from The Magic Flute features the euphonium (or bassoon). Geoffrey Brand has even added a variation so that the soloist has even more of an opportunity to display instrumental prowess.

This arrangement can be played as a solo for euphonium (baritone) or bassoon. The introduction and The Birdcatcher's Aria are as in Mozart's opera 'The Magic Flute' (where the aria is sung 3 times), with the distinctive flute figure as a feature. In this arrangement, a variation has been added to provide the soloist with the opportunity to display instrumental prowess.

The song, entitle Voi che sapete (Tell me fair ladies), is introduced in the opera as if written by Cherubino himself and is simply a diversion rather than of relevance to the plot. Although initial reaction to The Marriage of Figaro was somewhat lukewarm, it has of course established itself as one of the great comic operas, and this canzona became and 18th century pop song.

In June 1997 I was in New York and had a free weekend. On Sunday morning I was awoken early by a great deal of banging and saw that barriers and roadblocks had been erected throughout Central Park. Why? I soon heard the answer: a great parade. When the Americans put together a parade they really mean it! This one lasted 3 hours and brought the center of New York to a standstill. Bands, dancers and choirs marched past in celebration of the Jewish faith. New York Parade is completely original but its starting point in my imagination was a marching band, a choir and Broadway. The marching band starts in the distance, passes by and as it moves away we hear the next block of performers singing, almost chanting, a hymn (called Jewish Song). The groups suddenly turn into Broadway, as a song from an imaginary show intervenes but then the band and choir return in counterpoint and all three themes come together.

Both title and thematic material of the Capriol Suite are derived from a famous book on dance steps published in 1589 in France. It indicated the rhythms, the steps associated with them, the manner of playing pipes and tabors, and adds nearly fifty dance tunes of the period. It was from these tunes that composer Peter Warlock selected material for his Capriol Suite for String Orchestra.

Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan and was launched at Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York, after first securing the British copyright with one performance in Paignton, Devon, England. The story hinges on the fact that when Frederic was a little lad his parents instructed Ruth, his nursery-maid, to apprentice him as a seafaring pilot. Being slightly hard of hearing, Ruth unfortunately mis-heard the instruction. When Frederic became 21 he was eligible to become a fully-fledged pirate, but to general consternation declares he will devote his live to piracy's extermination. Soon, on meeting a group of sisters on their way to the beach Frederic implores them to join him in his attempt to rescue himself from his dilemma and is over-joyed when Mabel, in spite of her sisters' misgivings, responds sympathetically - influenced perhaps by Frederic's attractive good Looks - singing beguiling waltz, 'Poor Wandering One' and going even further by encouraging him to 'Take heart fair days will shine, hake any heart, take mine'!
