Titan's Progress, which is Hermann Pallhuber's first work for the British style brass band, contains references to the music of Gustav Mahler. Motifs from Mahler's First Symphony are employed throughout and especially the principal theme of the finale. Pallhuber's music is programmatic and uses the content of the novel and its hero Albano's evolution for its underlying structure. The stylistic variety of the work (including the Chorale, an impudent Landler, a dancing Farandole, and a climactic Fugue) are Mahleresque in their influences. Titan was a novel by the German author Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, who later known as Jean Paul, and was considered the author's main work. At almost 900 pages in length, it tells the story of the transition of its hero, Albano de Cesara, from a passionate youth to a mature man. Jean Paul was one of Gustav Mahler's favorite authors and the latter gave the original five-movement version of his first symphony the subtitle The Titan -- in deference to Jean Paul's novel.

My lecture of the Winterreise does not demand a new expressive interpretation, but instead systematically exercises the freedom which all interpreters allow themselves intuitively, such as: instrumental dilation i. e. acceleration of the pace, transposition into other keys and elaboration of characteristic color timbres. In addition, there are further ways of reading; the music; jumping around in the text, repeating certain lines, interrupting the continuity, comparing different expressions of the same phrase ... All these new possibilities are subjected to my compositional discipline and form autonomous formal processes which are imposed on Schuberts original. The transformation of the piano tones into a multifaceted orchestra full of resonance is only one of many aspects.(Hans Zender)CDs:Hans Peter Blochwitz (Tenor), Ensemble Modern, Conductor: Hans Zender CD BMG 9026-68067-2 Christoph Pregardien (Tenor), Klangforum Wien, Conductor: Sylvain Cambreling CD Kairos 0012002KAIJulien Pregardien (Tenor), Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Kaiserslautern, Conductor: Robert Reimer2 CD's P.RHEI (2016)Bibliography:Adam-Schmidmeier, Eva-Maria von: Schubert interpretieren. Nicholas Kok's newly-created vocal score of the 4th and 5th movements of Mahler's 2nd Symphony is aimed particularly at vocal soloists and choral singers who wish to practice the two vocal movements in this work; it is available on sale, as is the chorus score. To ensure a secure entry at the attacca beginning of the 4th movement, the vocal score begins earlier in the 3rd movement. The rehearsal letters in the prevalently used orchestral materials have been taken into consideration so that the vocal score and chorus score are compatible with all the available music editions. In his 2nd Symphony, premiered in 1895 after a seven-year gestation period, Gustav Mahler combined different work concepts which he had previously tried out in various independent compositions: the 1st movement with the original title Todtenfeier was conceived as a symphonic poem, the 3rd movement is based on the original song for voice and piano St Anthony of Padua's Sermon to the Fishes, the 4th movement is the orchestral song Urlicht for alto, with text, like the 3rd movement, from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and the 5th is a setting and elaboration of the Klopstock Ode Die Auferstehung for soprano and alto solo with mixed chorus. Mahler created a work in the vocal-symphonic tradition founded by Beethoven and, despite its challenges in extent and scoring, it remains one of his most popular compositions.

Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Instrumentation: 3(3rd dPicc)+Picc.3(3rd dEH).2+BCl+Eb.3(3rd dCBsn: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): 2Hp.Clst.Mand: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Soli T, A (or Bar). Movements: 1. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (The Drinking Song of Earth's Sorrow); 2. Der Einsame im Herbst (Autumn Loneliness); 3. Von der Jugend (Youth); 4. Von der Schönheit (Beauty); 5. Der Trunkene im Fruhling (Wine in Spring); 6. Der Abschied (The Farewell). Reprint edition.

The Adagietto is the 4th movement of Gustav Mahlers (1860-1911) FIFTH SYMPHONY, written in 1901-1902. It is Mahler's most popular work, often performed separately from the symphony. This incredibly expressive piece of music was a love song to his future wife Alma, and is eminently suitable for solo violin with piano accompaniment. Otto Winterbecher, a disciple of Mahler, created this transcription.

Never before published! Mahler composed the work at the beginning of 1888 in Leipzig. In 1889 it was subsequently premiered as a symphonic poem in Budapest. Now, Universal Edition is justifiably proud to publish this first score of Titan, the early five-movement version of his Symphony No. 1, in connection with the Complete New Critical Edition. Our first edition of Titan contains the history of its genesis, reviews of the performances in Hamburg and Weimar, a discussion of the programmes and the underlying ideas behind the work, colour prints of important sources, and an extensive critical commentary that describes the variants, problematic passages and all editorial interpolations. (-- Universal Edition) The International Gustav Mahler Society is the academic authority on my grandfather's works, and Universal Edition is his trusted publisher. (-- Marina Mahler).

The first textcritical edition of Mahler's most extensive work is a further milestone in the project, Mahler - The Symphonies. The many sources first consulted here for an edition include, among others, the conducting scores used for early performances by Mahler, Mengelberg and other conductors, as well as the parts of the Vienna Philharmonic used by Mahler, Bruno Walter and many additional great conductors right up to the present. Furthermore, another set of parts from Mahler's personal possession was consulted. These sources, significantly expanding the source base in comparison with that of the 1974 Kritische Gesamtausgabe, guarantee a reliable, scholarly valid music text, shedding at the same time new light on Mahler's complex process of revision. In unprecedented comprehensiveness, the editorial report contains references from Mahler's letters and other authentic documents indispensable for an understanding of the work and its interpretation. The orchestral parts feature as usual optimal readability and practicality. Rounding off the edition is the introductory essay Mahler as Symphonist, together with the knowledgeable preface by Constantin Floros, doyen of Mahler research.

The Chorale from the Finale of Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection) by Gustav Mahler is taken from the fifth movement, lasting over an hour. The Chorale is actually a quote from the Dies Irae, which Mahler called the march of the dead. Also added in is the Resurrection theme which is almost a fanfare. This excerpt from the Symphony features the low brass which makes this arrangement by Randall Malmstrom so meaningful. For advanced performers, this work will add another dimension to your concert.

The Blumine movement included in the original five-movement version of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 was long considered lost. Composed as early as 1884 for a theater piece, Mahler inserted it into the symphony as its second movement in 1888. After three performances, he turned his back on this Love Episode, calling the sentimental, gushing movement a youthful folly, and removed it. Mahler's Hamburg autograph score was only rediscovered in 1966. Benjamin Britten gave the Blumine movement a new hearing at the 1967 Aldeburgh Festival. The critical new edition is based for the first time on the autograph score, together with the meanwhile rediscovered score copy with Mahler's last revisions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement.First edition based on the copy of the score revised by Mahler Hamburg 1893.
