One of Frederic Chopin's best known works, Prelude, Op. 28, No. 4, presents emotion-packed performance opportunities for bands at all levels. This new Ed Huckeby transcription for band provides an almost literal translation of Chopin's original work with tremendous musical challenges in both the interpretive and dynamic realms, providing the ensemble an opportunity to explore musical possibilities which might be less attainable in a more technical piece. The recognizable melodic and harmonic structures will make this piece a real hit with concert audiences and provides an opportunity to teach the musical styles of the greatest 19th century composer of piano music. Great music!

One of Saint-Saëns' mature works, the Six Ã?tudes pour piano op. 52, appeared in 1877 around the same time as his opera Samson et Dalila. The second etude of the cycle was originally written in 1868 for the â??Ã?cole du pianisteâ?, the French edition of the piano method by Lebert and Stark. With his collection, the composer who had embarked on a compilation of piano etudes for the first time, evidently wanted to deliberately? distinguish the cycle from the character of the brilliant concert etude: Each of the etudes is devoted to one or more specific difficulties or compositional techniques, as in the fugues. He assigned the individual pieces to famous virtuosos of his time, such as Anton or Nikolai Rubinstein or Marie Jaëll.The new Urtext editions are based on the ground-breaking musical text of the Å?uvres instrumentales complètes by Camille Saint-Saëns, for which the editor has meticulously evaluated all known sources. A detailed Foreword provides information on the genesis and significance of the etudes. Readings and variants are precisely documented in the Critical Commentary (Eng). Notes on interpretation (Fr/Eng/Ger) as well as an elegant music engraving provide the pianist with optimal conditions for studying these virtuosic etudes.

Mendelssohn’s contemporaries frequently mentioned his “Hymn of Praise†in the same breath as Beethoven’s Ninth – and often enough viewed it as an imitation. Mendelssohn authority John Michael Cooper, in his extensive Introduction to this new Urtext edition, shows that the comparison is completely unfounded: with this work Mendelssohn created a new genre to which he gave the name “symphony-cantataâ€. Later he added a secular counterpart with “Die Erste Walpurgisnachtâ€.Drawing on all relevant sources, Cooper provides a detailed account of the genesis and structure of this monumental work. Rounding off his scholarly performing edition are notes on the work’s performance, e.g. tempo, articulation and dynamics. For the first time the piano reduction includes Mendelssohn’s authorised version of the “Sinfoniaâ€, based on the first edition of No. 1 for piano solo.
