Intermezzo is the second movement of Satoshi Yagisawa’s Clarinet Concerto. The concerto was first performed by Higashi-Hiroshima Wind Ensemble in Hiroshima, Japan in 2010 with guest performer Shinsuke Hashimoto, clarinettist with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Atsushi Kageyama. Inspiration for this work came from the fact that both Satoshi Yagisawa and Shinsuke Hashimoto graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae.Clarinet Concerto>/I> is the pinnacle of Satoshi Yagisawa’s “Concerto Series” which also features his Suite Concertante for Piano and WindOrchestra, Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Saxophone Concertino, andConcertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra.Yagisawa’s characteristic heartfelt theme in the second movement is especially popular and consequently—entitled Intermezzo—it is often performed independently.Soloist: Grade 4

Intermezzo is het tweede deel van Satoshi Yagisawa’s Clarinet Concerto. Het concert als geheel werd in 2010 onder leiding van dirigent Atsushi Kageyama door het ensemble in première gebracht, samen met gastklarinettist Shinsuke Hashimoto - die werkzaam is bij het Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra. Hava Nagila (the title means ‘let us rejoice’) is perhaps the best known example of a style of Jewish music called ‘klezmer’. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages.‘Klezmer’ is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song) and the roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned by the ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews).Since the 16th century, lyrics hadbeen added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The melody of Hava Nagila was adapted from a folk dance from the Romanian district of Bucovina. The commonly used text is taken from Psalm 118 of the Hebrew bible.

Hava Nagila (de titel betekent ‘laat ons gelukkig zijn’) is misschien wel het bekendste voorbeeld van klezmer, een Joodse muziekstijl.De klezmermuziek komt van oorsprong uit de sjtetls (dorpen) en de getto’s van Oost-Europa, waar rondtrekkende Joodse troubadours, bekend als klezmorim, al sinds de middeleeuwen hadden opgetreden bij feestelijkheden, en dan met name bruiloften.Klezmer is een Jiddische term waarin de Hebreeuwse woorden kley (instrument) en zemer (lied) zijn samengevoegd. Among these works are the harpsichord concertos. They are noted down in a manuscript that is a unique and probably the most important document for the instrumental repertoire of the LeipzigCollegium Musicum.

Bach arranged his concerto movements in such a way that the harpsichord is given a solo part that exploits the instrument'sclavieristicpossibilities to the full. These works thus fix a decisive moment in the early history of the piano concerto genre which received significant impulses from Bach and his circle of students.

The autograph offers revealing insights into the composer's working methods, elucidated by Christoph Wolff in an accompanying essay. Martina Rebmann describes the genesis of the Bach collection at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, which holds the autograph.
