The Five Lesser Joys of Mary begins with a conventional Nativity scene - the ox and the ass for warmth, the star, the Wise Men - to verses attributed by Warlock to one Daniel Lawrence Kelleher, editor of Christmas Carols (No. 18 in the second series of Augustan Books of English Poetry) where the anonymous verses were published.
The fourth stanza recounts Jesus 'Confounding the doctors, the poor little Child,' while the fifth carries us to Calvary and a singularly lame conclusion as Mary 'Saw Jesus droop over and lie very still, She thought of the good times they had long ago When He'd droop in her arms and she'd singhusheenlo.'
Strophically composed, with small variations, Warlock's tenderness seems generic.

The Serenade for Strings, dedicated to Frederick Delius on the occasion of his 60th Birthday was an acknowledgement of the debt Warlock owed to the older composer, and the culmination of almost 12 years of friendship. This is a wonderful piece full of Warlock's characteristic subtle harmonic changes and it has been effectively transcribed for Piano Duet by Fred Tomlinson of the Peter Warlock Society. There are comprehensive background notes in an extensive introduction. Note that two copies of this book are required to perform this work.

Come To Bethlehem is a Christmas carol by Dom Gregory Murray. It takes its melody from Capriol Suite, and is scored for SATB choir, with a Piano reduction for rehearsalpurposes.
Capriol Suite is a set of six dances in the Renaissance style. They form the most famous work of the English composer Peter Warlock (1894-1930), who also achieved fame for his scandalouslifestyle. Each dance is short, and draws inspiration from the tunes found in a 1589 dance manual. Warlock was an ardent admirer of Delius throughout his career, and his harmonic style is very similar. The whole suite waswritten over a single weekend in October 1926.

Michael Brand's arrangement follows the original dance styles of Warlock's string composition but adds tambour-like drums to accentuate the dance rhythms and steps. Both title and thematic material of the Capriol Suite are derived from a famous book on dance steps published in 1589 in France. It indicated the rhythms, the steps associated with them, the manner of playing pipes and tabors, and adds nearly fifty dance tunes of the period. It was from these tunes that composer Peter Warlock selected material for his Capriol Suite for String Orchestra.

Predating the well-known Bethlehem Down by just a few years, As dew in Aprylle is one of several choral works by Warlock to draw on texts from the 15th century Sloane Manuscript, yet musically this work demonstrates a similar mastery of part writing and fondness for chromatic harmonic language. First published on 12th June, 1924, following a period of unavailability this is now restored to the catalogue in a newly-prepared edition. For unaccompanied mixed voices, with occasional divisi.

Golden Slumbers is based on the poem Cradle Song from the Thomas Decker 1603 comedy Patient Gissel. The poem was set to music by Peter Warlock in 1918 as a lullaby. Carl Strommen pushes the beauty and lyrical nature of the song in his arrangement. There are interesting changes in color and texture with good use of solo instruments to contrast the full ensemble statements. A perfect vehicle to teach phrasing and musicianship to developing musicians.Golden Slumbers is based on the poem Cradle Song from a Thomas Decker 1603 comedy Patient Gissel. The poem was then set to music by Peter Warlock in 1918. Golden Slumbers should be treated as a lullaby with the following lyric as a guide:Golden Slumbers, Kiss your eyes, smiles awake you when you rise, Sleep pretty maiden, do not cry. and I will sing a lullaby.
