Piano (P+KRB) SKU: HL.49042462 No. 1-4. Composed by Carl Maria von Weber. Edited by Markus Bandur. This edition: Full-cloth binding. Sheet music. Edition Schott. Score and critical commentary, complete edition. Op. 24+39+49+70. 372 pages. Schott Music #WGA1071. Published by Schott Music (HL.49042462). ISBN 9783795794637. German - English. Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. $354.00 - See more - Buy online

Edited by Hans Dieter Clausen. This edition: complete edition, urtext edition. Linen. Hallische Handel-Ausgabe (HHA) II/14,1+2. Complete edition, Score. HWV 17. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA10720_01. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA10720-01). ISBN 9790006550302. 33 x 26.5 cm inches. Text Language: Italian. Preface: Hans Dieter Clausen. Text: Haym, Nicola Francesco (nach Giacomo Francesco Bussani). Giulio Cesare in Egittois by far Handel's most frequently performed opera owing its success not least to its subject matter, one of the best known love stories in world history. Already during Handel's lifetime the popular work was often staged and therefore adapted by Handel for each of the performance conditions. The editor Hans Dieter Clausen has succeeded in editorially defining and practically presenting these adaptations - essentially four versions - on the basis of a meticulous study of the sources within the framework of theHalle Handel Edition. The new edition allows for a performance of each of the four versions. The version of 1725 is particularly noteworthy because Handel newly devised the role of Sesto for the famous tenor Francesco Borosini.
The libretto shows the Roman dictator Cesar in a friendly light. He instructs his enemy, the Egyptian tyrant Tolomeo, how to treat adversaries; he reconciles the widow and son of his enemy Pompeo who was murdered by Tolomeo; he is generous and just, hands on, but also diplomatic, thoughtful, aware of the limits of his power, and susceptible for art and nature. However, the actual protagonist of the opera is Cleopatra. In a masterly way Handel develops her character musically.
In his extensive Foreword Hans Dieter Clausen not only decribes the genesis, historical background, reception and the edition of the opera, he also examines the musical and dramaturgical reworking of individual numbers inGiulio Cesare. Handel was such an expert in adapting arias for new purposes and other characters that he did not only meet the needs at hand but often the new version surpassed the original. In this way, the reader gains, in passing, a well-founded insight into Handel's work methods when designing and redevising his characters. The detailed Critical Commentary includes information on the comprehensive and highly complex source situation as well as on individual editorial decisions.

Opera Piano, solo Voices SKU: PR.411411630 Opera in Two Acts. Composed by Ricky Ian Gordon. Piano Reduction Score. 438 pages. Duration 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Theodore Presser Company #411-41163. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.411411630). ISBN 9781491137635. UPC: 680160691081. English. Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage. Originally an award-winning play, Lynn Nottage’s INTIMATE APPAREL was inspired by her great-grandmother’s life in New York in the early 20th century. The Pulitzer-laureate also created the libretto for Ricky Ian Gordon’s grand-yet-intimate opera whose complete instrumentation is two pianos. The story follows the life of a young, single seamstress who has recently emigrated from Barbados, the fascinating cast of characters in her life, and her socially-unacceptable feelings of affection for a Jewish fabric salesman. The premiere production of this 2½-hour drama was televised nationally from Lincoln Center on PBS’s “Great Performances.”. Intimate Apparel began with an old photograph that I found haphazardly wedged between the pages of a Family Circle magazine. I was helping my grandmother, who’d developed debilitating senile dementia, move from her longtime home in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. In the midst of a pile of weathered magazines I discovered a black and white passport photograph of my grandmother Waple and her younger sister Eurita sitting on their mother’s lap. It was the first time I’d ever seen an image of my great-grandmother Ethel, a striking woman with high West African cheekbones and a gentle intensity. She had been a seamstress from Barbados, who at the age of 18 arrived alone in New York City at the dawn of the Twentieth Century. The image invited a thousand questions, none that could be answered by the living, and it led me on a journey to piece together the history of my great-grandmother Ethel, a woman who was basically a stranger to me. The only clue that I had about Ethel, was a story that my grandmother had once told me about her mother corresponding with a man laboring on the Panama Canal, who would eventually become her husband. I was fascinated by this story, which served as the inspiration for INTIMATE APPAREL.As I began my research for INTIMATE APPAREL at the New York Public Library, I discovered that lives of Black working women in the early 1900s were woefully absent from the archive. So, I found myself perusing help wanted listings, boarding house and clothing advertisements, looking for any sign of women like my great-grandmother on the printed page. As I was doing so, I began to find the characters that would populate the world of INTIMATE APPAREL; Esther the lonely seamstress, Mrs. Dickson the proprietress of the boardinghouse for Black women, Mr. Marks the Jewish fabric salesman on the Lower Eastside, Mrs. Van Buren the wealthy white socialite on the Upper Eastside, Mayme the sex worker in the tenderloin, and George the laborer toiling on the Panama Canal. As I was conjuring the characters, I realized that I was interested in the unexpected intersections between class, race, and gender at the turn of the Twentieth Century, and what happens when people across cultural and economic divides are thrust into spaces of intimacy.INTIMATE APPAREL began its life as a popular play, but it was the brilliant composer Ricky Ian Gordon who invited me to consider adapting it into an opera. He saw something epic and expansive in the life of Esther that he felt demanded to be sung, and with his loving guidance I was able to write my first libretto. It took me several tries to figure out how to wrestle my play into a form that was new to me. As a playwright, I kept wanting to maintain absolute control of the narrative. But, it was Ricky’s words that freed me creatively to find my way into the libretto. He said, “You’re not trusting my music as a narrative tool; I can say “I love you” without any words, with just music. So, allow me to be your collaborator on the storytelling.” And once he said that, we found INTIMATE APPAREL the opera together. $110.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Edited by Thomas Soury. This edition: complete edition, urtext edition. Linen. Jean-Philippe Rameau. Opera Omnia (OOR) IV/14. Complete edition, Score. Duration 2 hours. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA08858_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA08858). ISBN 9790006523368. 33.5 x 25.5 cm inches. Text Language: French. Preface: Sylvie Bouissou. Louis de Cahusac. Rameau's “Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour†was long considered second-rate because its première was associated with a political event. Yet this ballet abounds in novel dramaturgical effects that foreshadow his later operas, such as “Zaïsâ€, “Zoroastre†and “Les Boradesâ€. Working together with his librettist Cahusac, Rameau sought to weave the dance numbers, choruses and stage machinery more tightly into the main plot. He also experimented with stylistic devices unique to this work, the most famous being unquestionably the scene in which the Nile overflows its banks (an impressive ten-voice double chorus with solo voices and orchestra) and the sextet from “Arurisâ€, a scoring found nowhere else in his uvre.
For the first time, this scholarly-critical edition of “Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour†presents a reference version of the work that is based on all the major sources for both the libretto and the music, including two recent musical discoveries. As most of the performance material for the première has vanished, our edition is based on the version prepared for the Acadmie Royale de Musique in 1748.

Robert Schumann placed great importance on the genre of the overture, as can be seen in the chronology of the genesis of his sole opera Genoveva. In his Haushaltbuch the composer entered as his first idea thoughts of an overture, then produced the score even before having begun working on the actual opera. Schumann was right on the mark when he suspected that the overture alone should enjoy a favorable reception. The Overture appeared in print at about the same time that the opera was premiered. They evince a potential dramatic intensity that makes us regret all the more the loss of the first act. Only one aria of Act I can be definitely recovered from a surviving opera, but the rest has now also been successfully reconstructed by Alessandro Ciccolini, whose intimate knowledge of Vivaldi's working methods, combined with brilliant stylistic insight won universal acclaim for his work on Vivaldi's Montezuma and Ercole sul Termodoonte. $75.00 - See more - Buy online

Hilding Rosenberg (1892-1985) has been described as the first Swedish modernist composer. Influenced by Sibelius in his early years, he later absorbed the work of Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Hindemith. His teachers included Hermann Scherchen and Wilhelm Stenhammar. Beginning to compose larger works around the age of 30, he wrote eight symphonies, a variety of music for string quartet, and a number of theatrical pieces including opera. Working with producer Per Lindberg in the 1920s, he was asked to compose incidental music to a play by Spanish author Jacinto Benaventes. The Marionettes successfully premiered in 1926. | Tod Und Verklärung Op. 24 Orchestra [Score] Schott
Clothbound Orchestra (Score) SKU: HL.49047172 (Death & Transfiguration...(+)
Clothbound Orchestra (Score) SKU: HL.49047172 (Death & Transfiguration) Clothbound Score, Complete Edition in G. Edition Schott. Classical. Hardcover. Duration 1440 seconds. Schott Music #RSW306. Published by Schott Music (HL.49047172). UPC: 196288143406. When the 24-year-old Richard Strauss, assistant conductor in Munich, began the composition of his third tone poem in the summer of 1888, he saw himself close to the aspiration prescribed by his mentor Alexander Ritter: to become the successor of Richard Wagner as a musical dramatist. Strauss had already been working on the text of his first opera Guntram for a year and additionally devoted himself to programmatic orchestral works oriented to the musical language of Liszt and Wagner in order to prepare himself compositionally for his new task. With the aid of Strauss and other musicians including Ludwig Thuille and Friedrich Rösch who had been gathering for “Ritter's round table†in Munich between 1886 and 1889, RitterÂ’s intention was to achieve success on a broad front with the New German School following the death of its two protagonists Wagner and Liszt. We do not know whether Ritter and his supporters jointly planned Strauss's compositional path towards opera, determined the subjectsof his prospective tone poems and considered various strategies of their musical realization, but the influence of this group shouldnot be underestimated. It cannot be ruled out that the number of three tone poems was fixed, as was their sequence of composition, which would progressively achieve its zenith in an increasing orientation to Liszt and Wagner. The circle could possibly have also discussed initial links to literary subjects (Macbeth and Don Juan) and ultimately the abstention from this practice in the third and final tone poem. The subject of the work, or rather in StraussÂ’s formulation its “poetic modelâ€, has occasionally been interpreted from an autobiographical aspect. Strauss however did not experience serious illness until May 1891 and once more in June 1892, long after Tod und Verklärung had been composed. Even without an external reason, the material would have been only too attractive for an admirer of Wagner and Liszt like Strauss, not to mention for his mentor Alexander Ritter. The concept of 'death and transfiguration' had already played a central role in LisztÂ’s symphonic poems Tasso and Prometheus. $380.00 - See more - Buy online

Carmen was first set as a ballet by the famed Russian choreographer Petipa in 1845. It was based on the Mérimée novella and premiered in Madrid some thirty years before Bizet's opera was first heard. Subsequent versions followed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, some using and some discarding Bizet's music. In 1949, Roland Petit created a successful vehicle for himself and his wife Zizi Jeanmaire using the Bizet score. Maya Plisetskaya always dreamed of dancing the role of Carmen and had approached Shostakovich for a score. He demurred out of respect for Bizet's celebrated opera. It was eventually Plisetskaya's husband Rodion Shchedrin who agreed to provide the music after seeing his wife and the choreographer Alberto Alonso working on some choreographic ideas. His Carmen Suite ballet, based on Bizet, and scored only for strings and, in its theatricality, a showcase for Plisetskaya's considerable dramatic gifts. Shchedrin's Carmen Suite, one of the darkest settings of Mérimée's tragic story, deeply symbolic and overtly sensual, premiered at the Bolshoi Ballet on April 20, 1967. $40.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

String Quartet - advanced SKU: HL.49033197 Score and Parts. Composed by Paul Dessau. This edition: Saddle stitching. Sheet music. Edition Schott. Classical. Score and Parts. Composed 1957. 28 pages. Duration 7'. Schott Music #ED9617. Published by Schott Music (HL.49033197). ISBN 9790001134897. UPC: 884088075477. 8.25x11.75x0.071 inches. Dessau's String Quartet movement was written while he was also working on Brecht's opera Puntila. After Brecht's death in 1956 Dessau found himself looking for a new direction. On the one hand he was still working on music begun in collaboration with the poet, while on the other hand Dessau was trying to work towards a socially oriented musical aesthetic, which led him to compose songs for political purposes. Even this Quartet movement does not owe its inspiration purely to an artistic vision. In spite of its technical demands, the piece is intended to be comprehensible and could even be played by an amateur ensemble in its cleverly reduced form. Only discovered after the composer's death, the Movement for String Quartet is published for the first time in this edition. $22.99 - See more - Buy online

I fear the opera will be banned - if the whole work is not parodied through bad performance: only mediocre performances can save me! Thoroughly good ones will surely drive people crazy. Richard Wagner
While working on the score toTristan und Isolde, Richard Wagner expressed his excitement and elation about his new musical drama. Indeed, the radical originality of the work proved to be both unique and forward-looking: Over 150 years ago it signified thedawnof the modern era and to this day it has not lost any of its fascination. Throughout his life, Richard Wagner was proud of his even handwriting.
He constantly strove to produce manuscripts of a high calligraphic standard. The Tristan manuscript is also clearly written. More so than in his other scores however, traces of his working process are evident. It is precisely this aspect of the autograph that makes it fascinating. Reading it, one is witness to Wagner's highlyconcentrated, powerful and relentless writing. This manuscript is in every possible way unparalleled reflecting individuality and uniqueness.
In time for the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth in 2013, this great work is published as a BARENREITER FACSIMILE in cooperation with the National Archive of the Richard-Wagner-Stiftung Bayreuth. In addition to the complete score, the edition includes the autograph concert ending of the Vorspiel as well as three pages that Wagner rejected while composing and later used for sketches.
Ulrich Konrad, the renowned musicologist describes the genesis and performance history of the work in his comprehensive commentary. He also details the physical appearance and condition of the autograph as well as giving an insight into the musical language of Wagner.
