Evening Comes is the first piece in a series of commissions for the Saint Cyril's Music Series and is composed specifically for an evening service. Cardinal Newman's prayer, suggests a quiet, hushed, prayerful attitude which is evoked by an abundance of suspensions and resolutions within a relatively conservative harmonic context. The beginning tempo marking of Espressivo is intended to convey a feeling of rubato throughout, but not overly so. The fortes should never be thunderous, but the pianos should be exquisite, with the final amen eliciting a sense of renewed beginning rather than a final ending.l

A setting of verses 7 and 8 of Psalm 57 ('My heart, O God, is steadfast. I will sing and make music. Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! Deo Gratias was begun in a hotel room at about 4:30AM in Rome during a St. Cyril Choir Tour in April of 2007. It was one of those rare instances when the composer woke up with a compositional idea in his head and actually got up and started to work. The next few days were spent developing the idea and finishing the entire work after returning home to Van Nuys, California. The over-all mood of the piece is that it should be mesmerizing with its slow undulations and long crescendos with following subito pianos for dramatic effect. The piece has an interesting mix of changing meters throughout; however, the basic eighth note value never changes except for the occasional ritard. The entire text consists of Deo Gratias. Alleluia!, or Thanks be to God. Alleluia!

All We Like Sheep follows, with its jaunty changing meters and a keyboard accompaniment that could be done on piano or organ. An a cappella polyphonic setting based on the Sanctus chant of Mass XVIII. Though not particularly complex, the extensive divisi requires fairly sizeable forces, and the harmonic texture requires careful attention to intonation. The end result creates a powerfully rich sonority.
