The music for B-flat clarinet includes chord symbols which may be used by accompanying musicians (piano and guitar) playing along freely (comping) with the soloist, as is common in jazz circles. For that purpose, an optional part in C is also included. Wind Dances is in seven short contrasting movements, each containing dance-like rhythms, both slow and fast. Having two sons who both play the clarinet, I've heard many a woodwind quintet, so I've been wanting to write for the medium for quite a while. In this instance, I also added my own instrument, the piano. The work opens with a fast movement containing driving rhythms in the winds, which are then answered by the piano. The second movement features colorful effects in the winds and piano (slap tongue, air sounds, muted tones) leading to a long extended lyrical line, gradually orchestrated to involve all the winds. The third movement is a dynamic scherzo, with a separate middle section similar to a traditional Trio section. The slowly unfolding fourth movement is the longest of the piece and anchors the middle of the work. The fifth movement is a kind of echo of the third movement, though this time the dynamic scherzo is high and light, rather than low and dark. The sixth movement is related to the second movement, and is basically a solo cadenza for the clarinet, with a few accompanimental gestures in the piano. The seventh and final movement reprises material from the first movement, this time with new and driving dance-like gestures added.- Pierre Jalbert.

Asbjorn Schaathun TRIPLIS+ (1996-98)For mezzo-soprano, percussion, electric organ, alto flute, coranglais, clarinet, violin, viola , cello, double-bass and piano.Triplis+ consists of seven songs based on computer-manipulated text fragments from Wilhelm Muller's 'Die schone Mullerin'. The seven songs should be played without interruption:I) Warum nicht?II)Nicht so...III)AngstIV) Wohin?V) HeimatVI) StilleVII)RuhigThe score of TRIPLIS+ has a long history. The whole project began as a piece for piano and mezzo, DUALIS (1987), to which I added percussion instruments to the vocal and piano parts, which was deeply unsatisfying. (I also suggested certain ways of making different versions of the piece, a so-called 'open score', but this was even worse...) From the ruins of this piece I carved out a new DUALIS (1991), using the same material, but with no percussion instruments added and in the form of a traditional 'frozen' score. In 1993 I was asked to include a separate percussion part for a trio-version of my first undertakings of DUALIS. In close collaboration with the Cikada Trio I created a new version, TRIPLIS (1993) which then in turn was taken as a point of departure for an extended version of the piece called TRIPLIS+ (1996-99). In this 'version integrale', I - due to the requirements of the commission - added an ensemble of 8 instruments, sometimes elaborating material from the mezzo-line, sometimes contradicting or commenting upon it. The piano has a special role in both TRIPLIS+ and TRIPLIS; functioning as a kind of 'libro', the piano textures, which have the feel of an accompanying part, are played ad lib throughout the work. In this way the pianist can change the actual dramatical flow of the piece. The first performance of TRIPLIS+ took place in the Bjergsted Music Centre in Stavanger, Norway in April 1999, with the commissioner, Stavanger Contemporary Music Ensemble under direction of the composer. The score is dedicated to B.Asbjorn Schaathun.

When Stacy Garrop first heard the Appalachian folk song “Silver Dagger†at a folk festival, the simplicity of the melody and its cautionary love tale enthralled her, leading to several years researching the song. She discovered dozens of variants of the song’s text, melody, and title. Garrop’s trio is inspired by two versions of the folk song, as well as motives from a third version — her exquisite setting of the folk tunes creates a fascinating 5-minute work. SILVER DAGGER is also available for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano, and for Violin, Cello, and Piano.

“Following on the success of her two operatic works for children and teens ' Douce et Barbe Bleue, Les Fables Enchantées, Little Thummie and Cendrillon (based on Perrault), as well as the adaptation of Maupassant's short story The Dumpling (2014) ' Isabelle Aboulker once again hits the bull's eye with Myla and the Boat-Tree, a commission from the Villecroze Music Academy. In 2015, this musical tale for narrator, children's choir and instrumental accompaniment, was awarded the 'Music for Young Performers Prize' by the French Music Publishers Association. Both in the French version and Marci Meth's excellent English translation, it provides the material for an enthralling educational adventure in which children between the ages of five and eight are invited into their first experience of opera and choir singing. With her trademark finesse and sensitivity, the composer tells the story of a little girl dealing with the death of a person she'd cherished above all: her grandfather. Written for choir in unison, this tale wafts shimmering melodies over an instrumental accompaniment suffused in turn with gentle melancholy and light humour. An art that speaks from an open heart. The work was written in three versions: for narrator, children's choir and piano (AL 30 732)' for narrator, children's choir and trio (clarinet in B b, cello and piano: AL 30 733)' for narrator, children's choir and instrumental ensemble(flute, oboe, clarinet in B b, bassoon, horn, trumpet in C, trombone, percussion, 2 violins, alto, cello, bass: AL 30 734)Choral score: AL 30 743 &rdquo.

Composing for Boston Music Viva on a Fromm Foundation grant, Melinda Wagner drewinspiration from an astounding video of an industrious little pufferfish and his sand artistry.Working 24 hours a day, he carves out a beautiful medallion of swirls and ridges, in the hopeof attracting a sweetheart. Wagner has written, “I was so moved by the careful preparation, determination, patience, and artistry of this little fish, who has no guarantees of finding true love. The phenomenon reminded me very much of the act of composing – of creating something outof nothing, with few guarantees.â€.Several years ago, a friend shared the most marvelous video with me. In it, an industrious little puffer fish begins to prepare an elaborate work of artistry – his “etchings†– in hopes of attracting a sweetheart. Using only his fins, he prepares the “canvas†(the sandy ocean floor), and for the next week, working 24 hours a day, he carves a beautiful medallion of swirls and ridges. Shell pieces and pebbles are collected to adorn the masterpiece. And he waits.I was so moved by the careful preparation, determination, patience, and artistry of this little fish who has no guarantees of finding true love. The phenomenon reminded me very much of the act of composing – of creating something out of nothing with few guarantees. Rather than attempting to capture any action programmatically, I tried instead to express, in the abstract, the sense of anticipation, lovelorn hopefulness – and the optimism of a tiny, unsung hero.
