This stunning fanfare by veteran composer Robert W. Smith was inspired by the historic and legendary Boeing B-17 aircraft used by the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. Beginning with a powerful timpani statement, the brass section responds with a bold introductory theme. Strong melodic lines interacting with woodwind flourishes make this piece sound more mature and difficult than the grade level indicates. We highly recommend this majestic fanfare for any concert, festival or ceremonial performance!

ISBN 9790004485248. 9 x 12 inches.
In the vocal oeuvre of Johann Sebastian Bach, the arias scored for obbligato flute, for two flutes or for oboe constitute a dazzlingly varied repertoire. Treated on an equal footing with the vocal part, the obbligato parts assume solo duties in many pieces. The most demanding solo passages composed for these instruments in the 18th century are occasionally hidden in Bachs arias. The MUSICA RARA edition of Bach's collected complete arias and sinfonias presents an authentic musical text which follows the principal sources in phrasing and articulation.

William Grant Stillas catalog of works comprises over 200 pieces, including five symphonies, nine operas, four ballets and numerous works for chamber ensembles. He initially found employment as an oboist in pit orchestras in New York City, later as an arranger of popular music for various ensembles, including those by William C. Handy, James P. Johnson and Paul Whiteman. His career as a composer was launched with a performance in 1931 of his Symphony No. 1 aAfro-Americana by the Rochester Philharmonic, conducted by Howard Hanson, who would remain a life-long champion of Stillas orchestral works. By the 1950s the symphony had been performed in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and various European capitals. This notoriety earned Still a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1934, after which he moved to Los Angeles. He is credited as the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra (the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra), the first to have an opera performed by a major company (Troubled Island by the New York City Opera in 1949), and one of the first composers to write for radio, films and television.

Not much is known about the origin of Huntingtower, except for the fact that this ballad was composed in 1931 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman and the American Bandmaster Association, and was premiered on 17 April 1932 at a concert in memory of John Philip Sousa in Washington D.C. It is not even certain whether Respighi arranged the work himself, or left this to someone else. Huntingtower is the name of a castle in Scotland, where Respighi spent some time. It is possible that this ballad contains his musical impressions of his stay there. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation ofthe work to the demands of the contemporary concert band.
