The trio sonata is regarded as one of the core chamber music genres of the 17th and 18th centuries. Corelli remains to this day its best-known exponent, but also before and after him there was a multitude of exceptional works in the genre that remain largely unknown today. This two-volume catalogue raisonné has finally brought these treasures to light. Thanks to support from the Balzan Foundation and the University of Zurich, this catalogue now offers the first-ever bibliography of the genre. It encompasses all the published trio sonatas of the 17th and 18th centuries, and also provides detailed information on sources and works, plus introductory commentaries. This printed catalogue will be complemented by an online database with enhanced search functions that will enable both scholars and practising musicians to explore this fascinating repertoire. Flute Trio - three flutes or two flutes and alto/bass flute. These transcriptions of Corelli's Op. 2 Trio Sonatas make great ensembles for grade 5 players. Each sonata consists of four small movements, varying in length from 8 bars to about 50 bars. Movement titles are taken from dance suites of the time, but the tempi do not necessarily reflect the titles. The top two flute parts are rhythmically independant, while the third part provides the bass line. (An alto flute part is included as an alternative to a concert flute for part 3). Key signatures are simple (C, G major and A minor), giving the players time to focus on the polyphonic lines. Flute one reaches top G very occasionally, whilst flute 2 reaches top F# once. Musically both interesting and attractive.

Robert Valentine, born in Leicester around 1680, was one of the few English masters of Baroque music who achieved fame and enjoyed a high standing beyond the borders of his home country instead of within. He made his fortune in Italy where he seemed to have spent most of his lifetime. It is assumed that he returned to England in 1731. He died at an unknown place around 1735.Valentine was a talented composer. Apart from some concertos, he mainly wrote and published solo sonatas, trio sonatas and duets, works who clearly show his preference for the flute, he himself being a flutist.

Scheibe’s three sonatas for flute (or violin) and obbligato harpsichord were published by Haffner in the late 1750’s, but were probably composed much earlier; they contain a significant quantity of elaborate imitative writing that is out of character with Scheibe’s later music. Although rooted in the same tradition as the sonatas for flute and obbligato harpsichord by J.S. Bach, C.P.E Bach, and composers at Berlin court of Frederick the Great, these are more substantial works, each having four movements in the traditional slow-fast-slow-fast scheme. For the most part they are trio sonatas, the right hand of the harpsichord acting as the second treble voice, but several movements feature idiomatic writing for the keyboard. Also interesting is the large amount of ornamentation called for, particularly in the harpsichord part. While Scheibe disapproved of the excessive embellishments that Bach actually wrote into his melody lines, these sonatas are nonetheless heavily ornamented, albeit through the insertion of notational symbols; in addition to turns and mordents, Scheibe uses no less than three different trill symbols!

Double Reed Ensemble (part 1 oboe or bassoon, part 2 oboe or bassoon, part 3 oboe, cor or bassoon) - part of the Combined Wind Trio series. Corelli's first three Trio Sonatas make a great first step into ensemble music and the music of the baroque. Each sonata consists of four movements of varying lengths and difficulty, with equal interest in all parts. Oboe 1 goes up briefly to top F, but a lower ossia is given. If played as a bassoon trio, the top two bassoon parts spend most of the time in the tenor clef and are not for the faint hearted, but grade 8 players will be well rewarded. Parts may be mixed with the companion arrangements for flute, clarinet and sax ensembles.

The Albinoni trio sonatas are smashing, with each sonata more beautiful than the last. The violin parts share the melodies, and neither they nor the cello part venture too high, but are full of interesting tonalshifts and rhythmic variations. These are suitable for intermediate...players, and canbe played without a keyboard.--Sarah Freiberg, for STRINGS (March 2011)
