Two years ago in Rome, I encountered a murmuration of starlings and I was amazed with its overwhelming beauty, changing shape as it moved. Moving of a fish school that you can watch in an aquarium, has the same beauty and the energy. According to the scientists, their fine movement in a flock is based on the following three simple rules: - steer to avoid crowding local flockmates - steer towards the average heading of local flockmates - steer to move towards the average position (center of mass) of local flockmates The word Boids refers to bird-like objects (bird-oids), representing the beauty of their movements in a flock which is a result of balancing out with each other, following the principle of least effort. I wonder if these rules can be applied to the way a string quartet is shaped. Boids again has been written as a sequel to the piece Boids (2017), a 4 minute study for string quartet in the frame of the Kronos Quartet's educational project 50 for the Future. Spiritual AffinitiesSchumann had already worked on Byron's Manfred as a law student, and the topic fascinated him from that time on. Perhaps he discovered a spiritual affinity to himself in the romantic hero's inner conflict? In any event, he decided on a stage rendition of the drama with incidental music, an entirely new genre that he had been dreaming of for some time already. He conducted the overture - it dates from 1848 - for the first time as a separate piece in March 1852. In addition, he followed the preparations for the first edition of the complete performance material very closely, which was published by Breitkopf in Leipzig that same year. The Breitkopf Urtext edition of the Manfred Overture is based on this first print of the score and parts revised by Schumann. At the same time, this edition also marks a new chapter in the expansion of the collection of Schumann overtures that have already been published by Breitkopf (to Hermann und Dorothea op. 136, Szenen aus Goethes Faust WoO 3 and Genoveva op. 81).Audiences should be ready for something new and unheard of, wrote Robert Schumann to Franz Liszt in late 1851, referring to the world premiere of his Dramatic Poem Manfred.

This edition of Salve Regina by Pierre Villette is a version of this Marian hymn for SATB a cappella. It's written with lyrics in Latin and should be sung at a slow tempo (52). The lyrical piece features a long introductionfollowed by the Soprano solo and a finale. At the end of the solo, the voices alternate between the initial tempo and some slower parts to arrive to the close and finish in harmony. Pierre Villette (1926-1998) was a Frenchcomposer of choral and instrumental music. Strongly influenced by Catholicism, his musical heritage ran from Fauré to Messiaen.

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor.
